Uniting the campus community
As many have noticed, there is more activity than usual in Maucker Union. In the upper level of the union, students will now find renovated spaces for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) and veteran communities.
"These spaces were added because there is a student need within these areas for more support than they were receiving, as well as providing them a safe space to gather," said Ashley Minshall, program coordinator of student activities.
The LGBT* Center, which was previously housed in the lower level of the union, has offices for a graduate assistant as well as lobby space for gathering.
"The LGBT* Center is a huge leap forward for the UNI community which will encourage diversity, educate the campus about LGBTQ identities and provide much-needed services to LGBT students on campus," said David Pope, president of UNI Proud, the student organization for persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity. "The center will make UNI a much safer, more inclusive and more welcoming place."
The Military and Veteran Student Services Center, which was temporarily in Bartlett Hall, features offices for staff and other space for gathering. The center hopes to support military members and veterans at UNI as they transition between military duty, college and a new career. There is also an office for Julia Heuer, UNI's Military and Veteran Student Services Coordinator.
"The Military and Veterans Student Services Center provides a space where military members, past and current, can meet with others who understand the experiences and growth they went through," noted Heuer. "The space provides resources, networking opportunities and an understanding support system to help our service members achieve their civilian goals or further their military careers."
"I believe having the new offices located in the union brings them into the larger community gathering space," said Mike Bobeldyk, associate director of the Maucker Union Administration. "Students will find it not only to be a great addition to the union, but to the university."
