International Hijab Day

The Muslim Student Association will host International Hijab Day from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 9, in Old Central Ballroom B, MAU. Attendees will learn about the hijab (the Islamic headscarf), women's rights In Islam, view photos of influential Muslim women and try on hijabs.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Accounting students will provide free income tax assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Assistance in the preparation of tax returns will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday nights beginning Monday, Feb. 8, through Wednesday, April 6 (excluding March 14 and 16) in 223 CBB. No appointment is needed but a limited number of returns will be completed each night. Returns for foreign students and scholars will be prepared beginning Monday, March 7.

Registration open for Ninth Annual Graduate Student Symposium

The Ninth Annual Graduate Student Symposium will be Wed., April 6. The symposium is an opportunity for graduate students to showcase their research and creative works. There will be poster presentations, oral presentations and creative performances. The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 12.

Fashion 4 Action

The Black Student Union Fashion 4 Action will be at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, in GBPAC. The fashion show will tap into the fashion world with designers, showcase local privately owned clothing stores and display merchandise provided by Infiniti Enterprises. Activities include a runway show, hands-on teen workshops, seminars and music exhibits.

Victoria Hurst, public administration and political science, was honored recently as the Young Woman of Tomorrow by the YWCA during its 2015 Cedar Valley Women of Persimmon Awards luncheon.

The UNI American Advertising Federation placed first at the District 9 National Student Advertising Competition. The 16 winning district teams across the country will now compete in a semi-final round.

Olivia Mossman, a senior electronic media communications major, was named the Most Outstanding Intern by the American Advertising Federation Stickell Internship Advisory Board for her work last summer in New York City at global media agency Carat.

Molly Rome, a UNI senior majoring in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)/Spanish, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant to Argentina for an English Teaching Assistantship.
