Faculty & Staff Accolades

Carl Thurman, biology, received the James Lubker Faculty Research Award at the fall faculty meeting. In addition to UNI students and faculty, Thurman collaborates with scientists across the USA, as well as Europe and South America to produce novel scientific information.

Elaine Eshbaugh, applied human sciences, received the Class of 1943 Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching at the fall faculty meeting. Eshbaugh developed the only college course in Iowa on the topic of Alzheimer's and related dementias. She regularly mentors undergraduates in their research or has them involved with her own research team.

Robin Lund, associate professor of physical education, received the Class of 1943 Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching at the fall faculty meeting. Lund teaches a wide range of course work at the graduate and undergraduate level including research methods, statistics, anatomy and physiology and a variety of other courses in the movement and exercise science major.

Tim Gilson, educational leadership and postsecondary education, received the Ross A. Nielsen Professional Service Award at the 2014 fall faculty meeting. Gilson’s contributions to education include preparing principals in Iowa, advising MAE and doctoral students, and providing guest lectures on school law to UNI’s preservice teachers.

Ed Snowden, NSA leaker, patriot or traitor?

A panel will discuss Edward Snowden, the leaker of NSA documents, at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 1, in 002 SAB. Panelists include a former intelligence and counterterrorism expert, civil liberties scholar and organizational communication scholar. 'How One University Re-imagined the Academic Library'

Lee Van Orsdel, dean of University Libraries at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, will speak from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, Oct. 6, in the University Room, MAU. Van Orsdel will discuss her library’s new building and its impact on student learning, faculty scholarship and enrollment.

Theatre UNI offers $5 Friday

From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Oct.3, UNI employees can use the code "Friday5" at UNItix, or any campus box office location, to purchase up to two tickets per performance at $5 per ticket for this semester's Theatre UNI shows: "The Sweetest Swing in Baseball" and "Love and Information." More information on the productions is posted online.

Healthiest State Walk

UNI students, faculty and staff will participate in a commitment to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation by 2016 through the Healthiest State Walk on Wednesday, Oct. 8. Register for the UNI Well-being Walk, starting at 11 a.m. at Maucker Union, or the Wa1k for UNI, which begins at noon on the south side of campus. Graduate College Faculty Showcase

The Graduate College Faculty Showcase will be Monday, Oct. 6, with presentations by regular summer fellowship and PDA recipients. Oral presentations will be from 3 to 4 p.m., in 115 SRL, and poster presentations and refreshments from 4 to 5 p.m., in the Great Reading Room, SRL. Seeking common read recommendations

The selection process is underway for the 2015-16 "common read," a book that will be used in First-Year Cornerstone classes, provide inspiration for Strayer Wood Theatre productions and bring together the community to discuss critical issues. Recommend a book by Oct. 1.

Depression screening

The screening is free, anonymous and open to UNI students, staff and faculty who are interested in learning about depression. The screening is Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the UNI Counseling Center (second floor of the Student Health Center). Session times are 11 a.m., 1, 2 and 3 p.m. No registration is required.
