Update to UNI's smoking policy and tobacco cessation session

UNI has approved an update to its smoking policy. Campus is now tobacco free, not just smoke free, which means no smoking, chewing tobacco or e-cigarettes. The policy applies to walkways and sidewalks adjacent to city streets that adjoin university property, including the grass areas between the sidewalk and street. A map will be posted to the policy website soon. Join Pathways on May 18 for an informational session on the effects of tobacco on the body, the health risks associated with tobacco usage, how addiction is created and maintained, cost of tobacco products and ways to help quite smoking, along with how Quitline Iowa can benefit those looking to quite tobacco usage. Register in advance for the 9 a.m. or 3 p.m. session.

Summer office hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. will begin Monday, May 9, and will remain in effect through Friday, Aug. 12. Please coordinate department operations accordingly and communicate changes to affected staff. The previous announcement indicated an end date of Friday, Aug. 19.

Volunteers are needed for UNI's exhibit at the Iowa State Fair Thursday, Aug. 11 through Sunday, Aug. 21. Receive a UNI T-shirt and free admission in exchange for handing out UNI giveaways and interacting with interested fairgoers, including prospective and current students, families and alumni. Panther Pick Up

Panther Pick Up will be from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday, May 5, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, May 6. Trucks will be situated between Shull and Rider Halls, the northwest corner of Campbell Hall and near the Towers. Donate usable items such as running shoes, mattresses, furniture, books, clothing and more. Please consider donating your unwanted items to those in need in our community. Think twice before tossing your items in the dumpsters!

GRE preparation courses

The Academic Learning Center will offer intensive preparation courses for GRE quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning and analytical writing from 9 to 10:15 a.m., Monday through Thursday, beginning Monday, May 16. Fall courses from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays will begin Tuesday, Aug. 30. UNI apparel is back at Essentials

Just in time for the end of the semester and summer, Essentials is selling UNI apparel. Stop in the store in Maucker Union to purchase UNI shirts, water bottles, hats and more. Thanks to University Book and Supply for partnering with Essentials to provide a convenient on-campus location to purchase UNI apparel.

Leisl Carr Childers, assistant professor of Public History and the American West, was awarded the the Spur Award in Contemporary Non-Fiction by the Western Writers of America. This is award is given to writers of any discipline for exceptional work on the American West or in the Western genre.

Doreen Hayek, special projects administrator in ITS Educational Technology, was recently awarded the 2015 Friend of Science Award at the ICTM-ISTS State Math & Science Conference. Hayek has a long history of working with various aspects of integrating STEM education into the preK-through-12 and higher education classrooms.

Coleen Wagner, former secretary in the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President, was honored for outstanding professional service with the Regents Excellence Award for Staff.

Libby Vanderwall, career services coordinator in the Office of Career Services, was honored for outstanding professional service with the Regents Excellence Award for Staff.

Amy Schipper, associate director of admissions and communications in the Office of Admissions, was honored for outstanding professional service with a Regents Excellence Award for Staff.
