Faculty & Staff Accolades

Carl Thurman, biology, received the James Lubker Faculty Research Award at the fall faculty meeting. In addition to UNI students and faculty, Thurman collaborates with scientists across the USA, as well as Europe and South America to produce novel scientific information.

Elaine Eshbaugh, applied human sciences, received the Class of 1943 Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching at the fall faculty meeting. Eshbaugh developed the only college course in Iowa on the topic of Alzheimer's and related dementias. She regularly mentors undergraduates in their research or has them involved with her own research team.

Robin Lund, associate professor of physical education, received the Class of 1943 Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching at the fall faculty meeting. Lund teaches a wide range of course work at the graduate and undergraduate level including research methods, statistics, anatomy and physiology and a variety of other courses in the movement and exercise science major.

Tim Gilson, educational leadership and postsecondary education, received the Ross A. Nielsen Professional Service Award at the 2014 fall faculty meeting. Gilson’s contributions to education include preparing principals in Iowa, advising MAE and doctoral students, and providing guest lectures on school law to UNI’s preservice teachers.

Participate in UNI Town Hall Diversity Fair

The UNI Diversity Town Hall will take place from 2 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21. The diversity fair will be held from 1:30 to 2 p.m. in the Ballroom, MAU. Organizations with an emphasis on diversity are invited to participate. If your group is interested, email Amy.Petersen@uni.edu with your group's name and any electricity needs. Further details will follow in early January.

CIEP scholarship opportunity for ESL students

The Culture & Intensive English Program has a scholarship opportunity available for ESL students recommended by current UNI employees. This scholarship provides 100 percent CIEP tuition for the spring session, Jan. 13 through March 6. If you know someone who would benefit, please forward this opportunity to them. Library hours during Thanksgiving break are posted online. Youth books checked out anytime Saturday, Nov. 15, are due Monday, Dec. 1. Library online resources are available 24/7; if off campus, you will get a prompt to enter your CatID.

Free fountain drinks at 23rd Street Market during break

The 23rd Street Market, located in Commons, will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 22 through 29 during Thanksgiving break, with the exception of Nov. 27 and 28. With each purchase, customers will receive a free fountain drink in their own refillable cup. Cups are available for purchase if needed. One refill per visit; no limit on daily visits. Details on hours are posted online.

Academic Master Plan meeting

All faculty and academic administrators are asked to assist with development of a new Academic Master Plan for the university from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Monday, Dec. 1, in Ballroom C, MAU. There will be opportunity to provide input on UNI's academic mission and vision in working groups.

The Reaching for Higher Ground committee is accepting applications for mini-grants for the spring 2015 term from UNI departments and units for activities focusing on the theme "Media and Social Media: A Networked Society." Mini-grant awards are up to $1,000; the deadline is Dec. 1.
