UNI faculty artist Ross Winter will coordinate this day-long event for violinists. Exceptional guest artist Laurie Smukler will appear. Smukler made her debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at the age of fourteen. A graduate of Juilliard, where she studied with Ivan Galamian, she was a founding member of the Mendelssohn String Quartet, and currently serves on the faculty at the Juilliard School. Saturday, September 24, 2016 - 1:00 pm

Visiting artist Daniel Chapa will present a master class. Chapa recently served two years as a Teaching Fellow at the University of North Texas while finishing his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree. He received his Bachelor of Music from Louisiana State University in 2008, and in 2010 received his Masters of Music in Euphonium Performance degree from UNT. Danny is also a member of the euphonium section in the 531st Air National Guard Band of the Southwest, the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, the principal trombonist of the Odysseus Chamber Orchestra and a member of the Founders Tuba Euphonium Quartet. This event is free and open to the public.

The UNI School of Music presents its annual hands-on workshops for high school student instrumentalists preparing for All-State competition. This event is free and open to the public, but does require registration. To register, please visit www.uni.edu/music or call 319-273-2025.

Tuesday, September 27, 2016 - 6:00 pm

Visiting artist Michele Gingras will offer a presentation on klezmer clarinet. Gingras is Distinguished Professor of Clarinet at Miami University, where she was named Hays Crossen Curry Distinguished Educator in 2002 and Distinguished Scholar of the Graduate School in 2005. She earned her M.M. at Northwestern University, a Premier Prix in clarinet performance and in chamber music from the Montreal Music Conservatory, and studied in the doctoral program at Indiana University. This event is free and open to the public. 

Tuesday, September 27, 2016 - 7:30 pm

UNI jazz combos, coordinated by Chris Merz and graduate assistant directors, will offer a concert featuring jazz standards and new arrangements. This event is free and open to the public.

Wednesday, September 28, 2016 - 8:00 pm

UNI School of Music faculty artist Alexander Pershounin will present a double bass recital with collaborators and repertoire to be announced. This event is free and open to the public. 

Thursday, September 29, 2016 - 7:00 pm

It's a book release reading for "Under a Night Sky," the latest poetry collection from Paul M. Hedeen. Hedeen is the author of several works, including "When I Think About Rain" and "The Knowledge Tree." Open mic signup begins at 7 p.m. with open mic starting at 7:15 p.m. Hedeen will begin his reading at 8 p.m.

Thursday, September 29, 2016 - 7:30 pm

Visiting duo Covalence will present a recital. Covalence is a Chamber Duo comprised of internationally acclaimed performing artists Mark Clodfelter, trumpet, and Rebecca Wilt, piano. This dynamic duo has performed throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia to command audiences in some of the world’s foremost venues. This event is free and open to the public. 

Friday, September 30, 2016 - 7:00 pm

These are the most famous people you’ve never heard of. Three of Nashville’s elite songwriters perform and share the stories behind some of the biggest hits they’ve penned for today’s most iconic stars. With over 30 number one hits, these Grammy- winning writers have had their songs recorded by Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Lady Antebellum, Kelly Clarkson and many more. These artists will not just play great music but will tell the stories behind the songs and about the artists who recorded them. Come hear the Music City Hit-Makers perform the songs you know and love, backed by a live string orchestra!

The UNI School of Music presents its annual Vocal Arts Festival for high school student vocalists preparing for All-State competition and interested in vocal music at UNI. Monday, October 3, 2016 - 7:30 pm

Visiting artist Tony Baker will present a trombone recital. Considered one of the finest trombonists of his generation, Tony Baker is currently a faculty member at the University of North Texas College of Music. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, he is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota and the University of Central Arkansas. This event is free and open to the public.

Wednesday, October 5, 2016 - 6:00 pm

Faculty artist Alexander Pershounin will coordinate a studio recital featuring UNI students performing on double bass. This event is free and open to the public. 

Wednesday, October 5, 2016 - 7:30 pm

Under the direction of UNI School of Music professor and conductor Ronald Johnson, the Wind Symphony will offer a shared concert with the Symphonic Band, conducted by Danny Galyen. This event is ticketed. For tickets, call 319-273-4TIX.

Thursday, October 6, 2016 - 8:00 pm

This event has been postponed. It will now be held on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. in Davis Hall. 

Friday, October 7, 2016 - 7:30 pm

UNI Jazz Band One, under the direction of Christopher Merz will offer a shared fall concert with the Jazz Panthers, led by Robert Washut. Repertoire and soloists to be announced. This event is ticketed. For tickets, call 319-273-4TIX.

Monday, October 10, 2016 - 6:00 pm

Faculty artist Cayla Bellamy will present a bassoon recital. The program will include tried and true staples from the canon of solo bassoon repertoire by W.A. Mozart, Willson Osborne, William Hurlstone, Francisco Mignone and Marcel Bitsch. This event will be presented in collaboration with Robin Guy, piano, and is free and open to the public.
