I chose to come to UNI because I saw the education was good, the students and faculty are friendly and the price was right. I liked the fact that I was going to be able to be on my own and live in a totally new place with fresh opportunities.
I remember thinking that this was the kind of experience and education I had seen on television. I had never stayed in a dorm, had the opportunity to work in a lab or meet tons of new people in a faraway place.
This is a great place to make new friends, get a good education and have all the opportunities you did not know you needed or wanted.
The faculty here has been outstanding with their continuous assistance and answering all the questions I have for them. They are very easy to talk to and willing to help me with whatever questions I have for them.
Time management was the hardest thing I had to get used to; at my previous school I was not challenged enough and spent little time studying. In addition to the challenge of time management were all the opportunities with clubs and friends I made here which made it especially hard to get used to. It has taught me the importance of time management and prioritizing studying and activities.
I am in quite a few clubs such as vice president of the Hispanic Latino Student Union, president of the Chess Club, Psychology Club, Philosophy Club, Rock Climbing Club, Salsa Club and CSBS.
This has helped me understand what networking is and its importance. The leadership roles have taught me how to conduct myself in a professional manner and organize events. Working with the administration and public has taught me some of the bureaucratics of a position and to go for attainable goals and that you can never make everyone happy.
It has been everything I had hoped for; I have learned a great deal more than I expected. I have had the privilege of working with a few professors on their lab experiments. There have been so many interesting and fruitful classes that I find myself torn on which field I will pursue my master’s degree. Psychology is a rich and new field that is rapidly growing. Some of the main classes I have enjoyed are Scientific Methods, Health Psychology and Social Psychology.
The study of human behavior is a vast field with many new frontiers for those choosing to pursue. It is a young science that has been gaining momentum and hopefully I can help shape and contribute to this renaissance period that has been happening in the social sciences.
I really enjoy the gym where I can relax from academics by climbing on the rock wall, taking a yoga class, participating in a dance class or having a fun game of ping pong.
I do not believe I would be here without financial aid, although it can be frustrating at times with all the paperwork and knowledge one needs to use it; I doubt I would have had the confidence and ability to get private loans for my education. I have full confidence that I will be able to pay back my loans someday with the education I am receiving.
I have many different prospects with the education I have received from UNI. I am sure I want to go to graduate school and get my doctorate in psychology in order to become a professor of psychology so I can teach and conduct my own experiments. It is one of my goals to get my work published in the scientific community. My father was in the National Guard so I plan to enlist to help my country with my education and abilities.
