To pick one reason that I chose UNI would be extremely difficult, if not impossible. Of the things I was looking for in a college - small class sizes, excellent business college, many leadership opportunities - it seemed that UNI had all those things and many others that I would not have thought of.
The best thing about UNI is that although we are a large university, if you walked across campus you would think that we are small college. The sense community, the friendliness of students and staff, and inviting atmosphere of UNI have a way of putting you at ease the moment you step foot on campus.
I was really surprised how quickly UNI became home. I was able to make a very smooth transition to the life of college student. I believe this was due to the welcoming staff, many student organizations, and great house programs. Right away I found that I wanted to stay at school rather than go home for the weekend.
I am involved in several organizations on campus. The following is a list of organizations that I hold a leadership position on:
Besides helping to broaden my horizons, my involvement in these organizations has truly shaped my college experience. They have allowed me to work with some of the most outstanding students at UNI, while giving me the opportunity to give back to both the University and Cedar Falls Community.
I have had an absolutely awesome academic experience. My classes have been challenging, but very interesting and fun. For example, in Dr. Dise's Humanities courses there was a large amount of reading and studying which sometimes seemed like a lot of work, but the readings were of Epic poems or significant novels of different time periods. These readings culminated in classroom discussions in which the class tried to answer the questions, “what makes a hero and what makes us human?” It was this kind of upper level thinking and scholarly debate that I was seeking for my education.
I am happy with the major I selected thus far. I spent most of my first two years knocking out the liberal arts core and business core classes, so I haven't taken too many classes that are specific to my major yet. I am looking forward to getting more focused on my major these final two years.
The thing that I like most about my major is the flexibility that it gives me upon entering the workforce. As a Business Management major, I can enter nearly any industry. From industrial production to consumer sales to marketing; there is not a single industry that is off limits to a Business Management major.
Hard to narrow it down to just one sentence so here's three for me:
At UNI, I am making the most of every opportunity.
At UNI, I am making an impact on campus.
At UNI, I am getting involved and having an awesome college experience!
My favorite place on campus is, hands down, the UNI-dome. As a freshman, the dome was the place where I learned what Panther Pride is all about. Nowhere else on campus can you experience the same levels of energy, passion, and excitement! Nor will you find anywhere with so much purple and gold. A home football game is something that every student should experience.
There are lots of things that I would want to tell high school student getting ready for college. I think that the most important bit of advice that I could offer is that they are capable of far more than they are probably aware. UNI does a great job of helping students achieve their goals. Never have I been told that my goals are too ambitious. I have received only support and advice. I would tell them to remember, the sky is not even the limit… after all there are footprints on the moon.
I think the friends that I made and memories that we shared that I will remember most about UNI. I have been blessed to have met so many wonderful people in my time at UNI and it is the time spent with these people—hanging out in the dorms, catching lunch in the Union, cheering the Panthers on to victory—that will stand out the most.
The Financial Aid Office has helped me to secure student loans. They were very good at laying out all of the details of the loan and how it would be paid back.
Upon graduation I have hopes of working in the field of sports marketing and management. I would hope that my experiences in this field would allow me to achieve to achieve my career goals; either working for the USA Olympic committee or coming back to UNI as a professor teaching sports marketing.
