Using the Iowa Communications Network (ICN)

How does it work?

ICN classrooms are end-to-end fiber optic digital transmission sites connected to regional ICN classrooms all over Iowa. The ICN provides full-color, full-motion, interactive video transmission; error-free data transport; and sharp, crisp voice communications. Most classrooms are of sufficient size to comfortably seat at least 20 students. Delivery is limited to the state of Iowa.

Faculty members who teach via the ICN are provided individual assistance and training sessions to become familiar with the technology. In addition, UNI Continuing and Distance Education staffs each ICN session with a technician who assists faculty members while they teach. See below for technical support information.

To schedule an ICN session

Contact J.C. Last at jc.last@uni.edu or 319-273-3916. An account number must be provided before a reservation will be scheduled. Please note: It may take several days to complete scheduling for an event.

To cancel or change an ICN reservation

Contact J.C. Last at jc.last@uni.edu or 319-273-3916. All cancellations must be made 72 business hours in advance of the session date. If 72-hour notice is not given and a cancellation is made, you may be billed for the line charges, as well as any incurred room use fees. Do not assume the cancellation is made unless you have verbal/written confirmation. If J.C. is out of the office, you may ask to speak with the back-up scheduler, Kathy Hockemeyer.

Technical support

Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Mike Savage, SEC 130D, 319-273-7885
mike.savage@uni.edu

Each session is staffed with a student assistant in ameliorating technical issues that may arise during an ICN broadcast. Depending upon the ICN room, the technician will be located in the ICN room itself or in its corresponding control room.

Mike Savage is also available for immediate dispatch throughout the week (Monday–Friday) from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Should a need arise to visit or test equipment in an ICN room, please call or visit him.

Items mistakenly left in an ICN classroom will be taken to Mike Savage's office (SEC 130D).

After 5 p.m.
Pick up the fiber phone (located in the ICN room) and call the Iowa Public Television at 515-342-3182. A technician may be able to correct your problems immediately so you can continue with your session. As soon as possible after the class, please inform Mike Savage of any technical problems at mike.savage@uni.edu or 319-273-7885.
