UNI to offer Superintendency Advanced Studies Certificate Program at a distance

The UNI Department of Educational Leadership & Postsecondary Education is accepting applications through Nov. 15 for the Advanced Studies Certificate in Superintendency program. Scheduled to begin in Spring 2013, the program can be completed at a distance in two years by participating in 8 courses (33 units of credit) and extensive internship experiences. Twenty percent of students in the past two Superintendency cohort groups secured jobs requiring a superintendent’s license before the program was over.

Offered in conjunction with UNI Continuing and Distance Education, the cohort is designed for individuals seeking endorsement in the state of Iowa as a superintendent. More than 30 percent of new superintendents hired in Iowa over the past two years are UNI graduates. This performance-based program is unique in that it minimizes student class time and maximizes on-site skill development while working with a mentor. Students entering this program will be required to devote a considerable amount of time in an internship experience where work products and skills will be developed.

Courses in this program are offered Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. during fall and spring semesters via video conferencing technologies. Many courses include an online component, and summer sessions may include some attendance on the UNI campus. The program is executed using a cohort delivery model, meaning students will study with the same group of adult learners for the duration of the program. By enrolling in this program, students may also be able to apply for the doctoral program and apply the units of credit toward the doctoral degree. Graduates from the UNI Superintendency program have access to a network of more than 20 Iowa subject-specific experts to help in the critical first years as a superintendent.
