Long Term Care Administration Curriculum

This interdisciplinary program is offered jointly by the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the College of Education, and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. It is administered through the School of Applied Human Sciences in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and is under the supervision of the Gerontology Advisory Committee.

The Long Term Care Administration track qualifies students to take the state boards in order to obtain licensure as a nursing home administrator. 

According to information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be 16% growth in employment in this field from 2006-2016.

Curriculum notes:

Not all courses are offered every semester.

Please pay attention to pre-requisites for required courses.

Long Term Care Administration (GERO 4170)  is typically offered in the spring of odd years. It was offered in spring of 2011. It is scheduled to be offered again in spring of 2013.

Families & Aging (FAM SERV 3150) and Social Gerontology (SOC 3035) are typically offered every fall.

The following courses are typically offered both fall and spring semester:

  • Biomedical Ethics (RELS 3510, PHIL 3510, or CAP 3173)
  • Psychology of Aging (PSYCH 3204)
  • Principles of Financial Acct (ACCT 2120)
  • Principles of Managerial Acct (ACCT 2130)
  • Legal and Social Environment of Business (MGMT 3100)

Internships can be completed in the fall, spring, or summer semesters. LTC internships must be done in the state of Iowa.

It is recommended that Gerontology: LTC Administration majors take the following courses early in their college careers because they are pre-requisites for upper level major requirements:

  • Social Welfare: A World View (SW 1041)
  • Family Relationships (FAM SERV 1020)
  • Intro to Sociology (SOC 1000)
  • Intro to Psychology (PSYCH 1001)
  • Developmental Psychology (PSYCH 2202) or Human Growth & Development (FAM SERV 1055)

Medical Terminology (HPE 2160) is currently offered only as a Guided Independent Study Course through the Continuing Education office at UNI. This course can be started at any time and is not on the semester-based schedule. Students have nine months to complete the course. Contact Continuing Education to register. Psychology of Aging (PSYCH 3204) is also offered as a GIS course in addition to as a semester-based course.
