FAQ

Why should I join the Honors Program

The program gives you the opportunity to be part of a group of students and faculty who share your commitment to intellectual achievement. You will participate in classes and extra-curricular activities in a community that will be an important, rewarding, and enjoyable part of your college experience.

What are honors students like?

Like any other college student! Some are very outgoing and social, while others are more introverted. Their interests include politics, theatre, athletics, music, science, fine arts, and so much more. What honors students have in common is a commitment to making the most of their academic experience at UNI.

What are honors professors like?

They are dedicated teachers who are eager for the greater interaction with students that honors classes and events provide. They are often willing to serve as advisors for independent studies or theses, and often get involved with co or extracurricular programming. Honors faculty are enthusiastic about teaching motivated students and comfortable teaching in a small class setting that allows for discussion and interaction.

Do I have to take certain classes to be part of the program?

While students must accumulate a certain number of honors credits to graduate with University Honors designations, no specific courses, other than those required for the Honors thesis, are required. We ask that students take at least one honors course per year to maintain active status, but the choice of which courses to take is entirely up to you.

Will I have time in my schedule to fit in honors classes?

Yes. Honors classes are spread over the entire curriculum and throughout the various undergraduate colleges. You can take honors sections of liberal arts core courses as well as university electives. There is even the option of contracting traditional major or minor courses for honors credit.

Are honors classes harder than regular classes?

Honors classes are not designed to be harder, but we do hope they will be challenging. The idea is to provide the appropriate degree of rigor to help honors students be fully engaged in their academic experience. Honors courses are characterized by active learning methods and students are encouraged to help influence course content and direction.

Is there scholarship money offered to Honors Program participants?

The University Honors Program awards 20 scholarships each year to qualified incoming first-year students. In addition, students can apply for funding to support honors travel or research. See Scholarships for more information on these awards.
