CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa will host 'Sole Power,' a project designed to encourage non-motorized commuting to campus, and the annual Earth Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, at the Maucker Union Plaza.

'The purpose of Sole Power is for people to leave their cars at home and instead walk, bike or skate to campus,' said Kathy Gulick, UNI director of University Health Services. 'It encourages physical fitness, saves people money and it's good for the environment.'

During the event, the Department of Public Safety will register bikes, and Europa Cycle and Ski will provide free bike tune-ups to students, faculty and staff. Information about campus recreational walking routes and the Cedar Valley Recreational Trail maps will be available. Those who pledge to increase car-free commuting can earn t-shirts, water bottles and bike bells. The interactive Iowa Department of Natural Resources Mobile Education Trailer will be open as well. In addition, the Metro Area Redemption and environmental health science students will co-sponsor a can drive. Proceeds will benefit the Iowa Recycling Association.
