CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --The University of Northern Iowa is offering a course sequence beginning fall 2014 leading to the Driver Education Endorsement. The program allows teachers to earn the endorsement by completing nine units of credit over two semesters. Course topics include accident prevention, drug and alcohol abuse, vehicle safety and behind-the-wheel driving.

The endorsement program is offered via Adobe Connect, an interactive desktop video conferencing system, with additional in-car and in-person experiences as arranged. Some coursework is offered online using eLearning.

Completion of the courses qualifies licensed secondary teachers to teach both the classroom and behind-the-wheel components of driver education. Elementary teachers who have at least two years of teaching experience may meet the secondary student teaching requirement by completing the Experience in Safety Education course and providing a letter that documents the number of years of classroom experience.
