CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's Homecoming celebration begins Monday, Oct. 15, and continues through Saturday, Oct. 20. This year's celebration will feature new events including a Royal Court and a Homecoming Competition.

One new event is the student Homecoming Competition. All registered student organizations, fraternities and sororities and residence halls will have the opportunity to compete throughout the week by attending a designated number of Homecoming events. Teams must register by Oct. 3 at www.uni.edu/homecoming/homecoming-competition-registration.

The official kick-off ceremony will start at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 15, on the roof of Maucker Union. The celebration will include the Pride Cry Competition, performances by the UNI Spirit Squad and live music from the Panther Marching Band. At 7:30 p.m., A Shot of Reality, a program that addresses alcohol awareness, will take place in the Maucker Union Ballroom.

To celebrate this year's Homecoming throwback theme, the Homecoming committee is bringing back the UNI tradition of the Royal Court. At 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16, nominees will present a Royalty Showcase in the Maucker Union Ballroom. Participants will show their skills and compete for the titles of King and Queen. A Homecoming Picnic is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Campanile Plaza.

Thursday, Oct. 18 marks the start of the Traditions Challenge. Teams of five will compete in an "Amazing Race" challenge across campus and will take group photos at each destination in order to complete a challenge. Teams can register for the Traditions Challenge Amazing Race online at www.uni.edu/homecoming/traditions-challenge-amazing-race. Afterwards, students can head over to the Maucker Union to watch comedian Jessi Campbell perform at 7:30 p.m.

On Friday, Oct. 19, the UNI volleyball team will take on Indiana State. The game starts at 7 p.m., in the McLeod Center. A pep rally will be held on the south lawn of the center following the game. The event will feature live music and entertainment, as well as the Pride Cry finals. Campaniling will be at midnight, at the Campanile Plaza.

The UNI football team will face-off against South Dakota State at 4 p.m., in the UNI-Dome. Prior to the game, a Homecoming Festival will take place at the Alumni House from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fans can meet some of their favorite players and get autographs at the Panther Zone, as well as listen to performances from the Panther Marching Band.
