CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa School of Music's Jazz Band One, announced its spring tour will be March 17-19, to sites in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska.
The band, directed by Christopher Merz, UNI assistant professor of jazz studies, will play on March 17, at Sioux City North High School in Sioux City and at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs; March 18, at Bellevue West High School in Bellevue, Neb., and at Southeast High School and P.O. Pears Restaurant, both in Lincoln, Neb.; and March 19, at Pella High School in Pella.
Music selections for the shows will vary, but may include classics such as; 'Concerto for Cootie' by Duke Ellington; 'Isotope' by Joe Henderson; and 'Johnny One Note' by Richard Rogers.
The recipient of many awards and honors, the UNI Jazz Band One, the School of Music's top jazz performing group, has appeared at festivals throughout this country and in Europe. The band has received three Outstanding Performance Awards in the collegiate big band category of Downbeat magazine's Annual Student Music Awards, and has recorded 11 CD's.
