CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa will host its annual spring commencement services in three ceremonies. The ceremony for students receiving graduate degrees will be at 7 p.m., Friday, May 4. The ceremony for undergraduate students receiving degrees from the Colleges of Education, Business Administration and Division of Continuing Education will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 5. The ceremony at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 5 will be for undergraduate students in the Colleges of Humanities, Arts and Sciences and Social and Behavioral Sciences. All ceremonies will be held in the McLeod Center on the UNI campus.
This year's commencement speakers will be Martin McGoey, a graduate student majoring in English: creative writing; Spencer Walrath, a senior majoring in music and psychology; and Valerie Brey, a senior majoring in human, youth and leisure and human services. McGoey will speak at Friday's ceremony, while Brey will speak at the 10 a.m. ceremony and Walrath will speak at the 2 p.m. ceremony on Saturday. The commencement marshal will be John Vallentine, director of the School of Music. The names of the graduates will be read by Gretta Berghammer, professor of theatre; Gayle Pohl, associate professor of communication studies; Nicki Johnson, instructor of communication studies; and Dale Cyphert, associate professor of management.
Immediately following the ceremonies on Saturday, there will be a reception at Eldon Miller Plaza with light snacks and beverages. Friday's reception will take place in the McLeod concourse. Graduates and guests are encouraged to attend. There will also be areas set up for families and graduates to take pictures.
The UNI Department of Military Science will host its annual Spring Commissioning Ceremony at 3:30 p.m., Friday, May 4, in Lang Hall. Six cadets will be commissioned as U.S. Army lieutenants. Family and friends are invited to arrive anytime after 3 p.m. and to stay for refreshments immediately following the ceremony.
