UNI School of Music students earn top music honors

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Eight University of Northern Iowa School of Music students recently received top honors in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Iowa District Student Auditions, which took place Nov. 2 and 3 at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.

UNI students claimed three first-place honors. Colin Wilson, a sophomore majoring in music education from Iowa City, earned first place in the Sophomore Men Division; Brian Langr, a sophomore majoring in music education from Washington, earned first place in the Junior Men Division; Juan Ahumada, a student majoring in music: performing arts management from Cedar Falls earned first place in the Graduate Men Division.

Several students also claimed second- and third-place awards. In the Freshmen Women Division, Megan Grey, a freshman majoring in music from Cedar Falls earned second place; Kayla Kjeldseth, a junior majoring in music performance from Sioux City earned second place in the Junior Women Division; Ashley Armstrong, a senior majoring in music from Winterset earned second place in the Graduate Women Division; Sarah Draffen of Reinbeck earned third place in the Senior Women Division; Elizabeth Nelson, a graduate student majoring in performance: voice from Cedar Falls earned third place in the Graduate Women Division.

NATS is the largest professional association of teachers of singing in the world. The organization is made up of more than 7,300 members in more than 25 countries. The group encourages vocal art and promotes vocal education.
