CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa took third place at this year's Solar Splash World Championship of Intercollegiate Solar Boat Racing. Competitors from across the nation, as well as worldwide, came to Cedar Falls to compete in the world championship.

Istanbul Technical University in Turkey and Cedarville University in Ohio placed first and second overall, respectively. UNI placed first in the sprint event, second in qualifying heats and third in the solar endurance event. UNI was also given an award for outstanding drive train design.

Reg Pecen, professor of industrial technology and adviser to the group spoke highly of his team. "Compared with many top-notch engineering colleges in the United States as well as worldwide, I am extremely happy with the overall performance of my Solar Panthers team this year."

The Solar Splash is one way UNI promotes the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiative in Iowa. The event also explores sustainable forms of transportation and engineering technologies. For complete Solar Splash results, visit www.solarsplash.com.
