Northern Iowa Student Government

NISG Update

By: Spencer Shireman on Thu, 01/27/2011 - 11:36

Northern Iowa Student Government Senate met last night (1/26/10) to discuss and debate a number of pertinent issues facing the student community at the University of Northern Iowa. The Senate meets every Wednesday in the Oak Room on the lower level of Maucker Union at the University of Northern Iowa.

A bill that was vigorously debated during last night’s Senate meeting was Senators Boeckmann and Jensen’s legislation that reduces the size of NISG Senate from it’s current scope to 21 seats beginning during the 2012-2013 academic year. The legislation also redraws the districting from where Senators will be elected.

Last night’s meeting also produced a resolution in support to the family of and in remembrance of UNI student Jared Havel. Mr. Havel passed away earlier this semester.

Funding was also a point of discussion during last night’s Senate meeting. UNI fraternity Kappa Sigma and the UNI Philosophy Club were granted funding for their individual events by unanimous support.

The final point of debate last night was a funding bill over NISG’s desire to bring speaker, Rick Barnes to campus to address the dangers of alcohol abuse among college students. A second reading was granted and after debate, the bill was passed. Alcohol Awareness Week will be the week of February 28th.

We hope to see many more people at our weekly meetings! Stay in contact with your representatives and let them know how you feel about proposed legislation that will effect you!
