Frontal Passage

Examine the Analyzed Surface Maps.  Note where fronts are currently located and how they have been moving in the recent past.  Then examine the Forecast Surface Maps to see where a forecaster at the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center thinks the fronts will be found later based on his/her interpretation of the numerical guidance.  As additional guidance, make use of the observation that fronts are usually found in pressure troughs. If you examine forecasts of mean sea level pressure for the presence of troughs in the isobar patterns, you may be able to identify the passage of a front. The NGM, Eta, and AVN links for this section will take you to multi-panel plots of mean sea level pressure forecasts.
