There are many possible lifting mechanisms that need to be considered in producing a forecast. Numerical models of the atmosphere generally only try to anticipate large-scale ascent since most small-scale mechanisms that produce lift cannot be resolved by the models. Thus, numerical forecasts of ascent give an incomplete, but useful, picture of lifting processes.
