The Culture and Intensive English Program (CIEP) of the University of Northern Iowa, established in 1982, strives to provide nonnative speakers of English with intensive English language instruction and a cultural, social and academic orientation to the United States. CIEP students participate in listening/speaking, writing and reading classes at seven different levels. The CIEP sessions begin in August, October, January, March and June. Each session provides 20 classroom hours per week of English language study and cultural orientation. Experienced instructors teach small classes; the CIEP tries to limit its class size to 16 students. Classroom teaching combines instructor presentations, group work and individual projects. Elective courses are available as well.
The UNI Culture & Intensive English Program is accredited by the Commission for English Language Program Accreditation (CEA) for the period December 2016 through December 2026 and agrees to uphold the CEA Standards for English Language Programs and Institutions. CEA is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a national accrediting agency.
