MATH 4133/5133 Making Sense of Numbers -- 0/3 unit(s)
This course is developed for elementary teachers to engage in math through exploration of math content & research-based pedagogical practices. It is aligned to the Iowa Teaching Standards & embeds the components of the Iowa Core Curriculum & Iowa Professional Development Model. It is the first in a series of professional development seminars designed by UNI to help teachers think through the major ideas of K–6 math & examine how children develop those ideas. The textbook, Building a System of Tens: Casebook is filled with classroom episodes, or cases, that illustrate the mathematical thinking of students as described by their teachers. Participants view videos of math classrooms; explore math by doing math activities themselves; discuss central questions related to session content; plan, conduct, & analyze math interviews of their students; write about the implementation of a problem-based lesson; learn & reflect on the Iowa Core Curriculum & read overviews of related research.
