ELEMECML 4133/5133 WKSP: Teaching about Sudan's Conflicts -- 1 unit(s)

This workshop focuses on teaching about Sudan's conflicts, their geopolitical significance, and their consequences, including the growth in many U.S. cities, including Des Moines,of large Sudanese and South Sudanese communities. As follow-up to a three-and-a-half hour meeting, which will feature an overview of Sudan's post-independence history, personal stories from individuals from different areas of Sudan and South Sudan, a discussion of how teaching about Sudan and its conflicts can help meet Iowa Core content and skills standards, and a presentation on how teachers and students can become involved in advocacy efforts, registrants will do guided film viewings, interact with representatives of the local Sudanese and South Sudanese communities, and develop a curriculum or lesson plan project.
