The Office of Continuing and Distance Education (CDE) is pleased to announce the availability of course development awards for faculty members interested in converting an existing course to a fully online format using UNI’s eLearning system. Faculty members are invited to submit a proposal for the development of an online course to be taught during the Fall 2014 semester. Fall 2014 course proposals are due Friday, Nov. 22, 2013.
Priority is given to the development of courses that fill gaps in current offerings and increase access to educational opportunities. Evidence of demand for the proposed course is considered. Collaborative proposals that include the coordinated development of courses applicable to online endorsement, certificate or degree programs are encouraged. Proposals that include courses to broaden the offerings for non-traditional students, enhance existing distance education programs or meet a Liberal Arts Core requirement are also encouraged. Proposals may be submitted for courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
- It is expected that the faculty member accepting the development award will teach the course in the Fall 2014 semester. In addition, with CDE approval, the faculty member and department agree to offer the course at least one additional time during the next two years.
- Approval from the appropriate academic department head and dean is required.
- Proposals may be submitted for the redesign of courses that have been offered previously in an online or blended format.
- Courses must be designed so that students can complete the requirements without attending class on campus.
Course Development Stipend
The stipend for full-time UNI faculty/staff for developing a new online course is $1000 per unit of credit. The new course development stipend will be paid one time only for a given course. If selected for an award, the stipend for the redesign of an existing online course will be based on the nature and scope of the modification. Payment of this stipend will be made upon completion of a fully developed online course and a review by the CDE instructional development staff. Courses must meet the academic standards and requirements of the sponsoring department.
Professional Development Stipend – Quality Matters
In addition to the new course development stipend or course redesign stipend, full-time UNI faculty/staff members will be paid $1000 upon completion of two professional development workshops facilitated by staff from Quality Matters (QM). The workshops address research-supported standards and best practices in online course design.
Faculty members will be required to attend the following two workshops:

Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, 8 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Designing Your Online Course (DYOC) Workshop
It is expected that courses will be designed using the standards identified in the Quality Matters rubric.
Peer Reviewer Certification
Faculty members selected are encouraged to become peer reviewers for online courses. To become a peer reviewer, participants must attend an additional workshop, Improving Your Online Course (IYOC) – Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015, and complete a Peer Reviewer Certification course taught online (during two weeks) in the Spring 2015 semester. Faculty members will receive a total of $500 stipend for attending both the IYOC workshop and completing the online Peer Reviewer course. The primary role of a peer reviewer is to review the design of new online courses and provide feedback to the faculty member who developed the course.
Faculty members will be responsible for developing the content for the course, reviewing course content during the development process and facilitating instruction. Faculty members will send all content files to the CDE instructional development staff by Monday, June 2, 2014, for configuration and development in the eLearning environment.
The CDE instructional development staff will consult individually with each faculty member and provide comprehensive instructional development support.
Continuing and Distance Education reserves the right to limit the number of course development awards per faculty member.

Completed proposal forms (doc) should received by Belle Cowden (campus mail code 0223) by 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013. Faculty receiving an award will be notified by Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013.
