History (M.A.)

The object of this program is to prepare students for either further graduate study (thesis option recommended), teaching at the secondary or community college level (non-thesis option recommended), or history-related careers in government, business, or private research (public history emphasis recommended). Proficiency in a foreign language and quantitative methods is strongly recommended for those planning to do graduate work in this program. This program requires a total of 30 credit hours for both the thesis option and the non-thesis option.

  • Geographic Areas (Includes but not limited too):
    • ​United States History to 1877, United States History Since 1877, Medieval European History, Modern European History 1300-1815, Modern European History Since 1815, Middle East, Ancient History, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, China, India, and Japan
  • Thematic Areas (Includes but not limited too):
    • Cultural History, Economic History, Environmental History, Intellectual History, Military/Diplomatic History, Political History, Social History, Race/Ethnicity History, Urban History, Women's & Gender History, and Religion

  • Minimum undergraduate grade point average of a 2.75 on a 4.0 point scale
  • Official TOEFL score of (79), IELTS score of (6.5), or Duolingo score of (105) to be considered for full admissions
  • Writing sample (preferably a history research paper)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Applicant statement addressing motivations for seeking degree, career goals, and summarizing why you are pursuing graduate work in history and what career objectives you have.
