Undergraduate Research

The Mathematics Department at UNI has many exciting research options for undergraduate students.  Research projects are carried out with the help and guidance of Math Department faculty:

  • During Spring and Fall semesters, research projects can be taken as MATH 4990 for credit toward your major.
  • Research projects are also a part of the University Honors Program as UNIV 4197 (Honors Thesis).
  • In summers, the Math Department will usually support several undergraduate students through the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP). The program provides generous a stipend for 8 weeks of research under the direction of a faculty member. The program concludes with presentation of project results at the UNI Summer Research Poster Session in early August.  SURP projects will not be counted toward the major. More details about SURP.

We also suggest applying to various summer REU (Research experience for Undergraduates) programs hosted by other universities. The list of REUs can be found here.

We encourage students to talk to their academic advisers, course instructors, or virtually anyone in the Math Department about research opportunities. Check our faculty research interests here.
