There are several scholarship opportunities for incoming and continuing mathematics majors, elementary majors/math minors, and graduate stuents. These scholarships and information about the application process are listed below.

To apply for the incoming freshman and undergraduate scholarships, go to www.uni.edu and fill out the UNIversity Scholarship Application for Undergraduates form. Check there for deadline dates of scholarships which are typically in January and early February.

Scholarships - Available for Incoming Freshmen

**Mathematics Alumni Scholarships**

One $2,500* scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman student majoring in one of the following: mathematics, math education, or statistical and actuarial science.

**Glenn Boysen Endowed Scholarship**

Last year one $599 scholarship was awarded* to an incoming freshman math major.

**Irvin & Dorothy Brune Math Education Endowed Scholarship **

Last year one $1,502 scholarship was awarded* to an incoming freshman math education major.

**Bonnie Litwiller Mathematics Teacher Endowed Scholarship**

**Fred W. Lott Scholarship in Mathematics **

Last year one $2,953scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be an incoming freshman math major.

**Nathan McCay Mathematics Scholarship**

This past year, one $1,500 scholarship was awarded.* Incoming freshmen majoring in mathematics are eligible for this award.

**Charles and Dorothy McLeod Tubbs Mathematics Education Scholarship**Last year one $2,231 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be majoring in Mathematics-Teaching.

**Augusta Schurrer Scholarship - Math Excellence**

Last year one $1,736 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be an incoming freshman majoring in Mathematics.

**STM/Mathematics Scholarships**

The Math Department will award* two to three CNS/Mathematics Scholarships to incoming freshmen (current High School Seniors) worth $3,000 each and we anticipate each scholarship to be renewable for up to three more years, provided that the student makes satisfactory progress toward a bachelor's degree with a major in some area of mathematics. By satisfactory progress, we mean the student must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA over an approved program of study that includes appropriate coursework in mathematics.

## Scholarships - Available for Current Undergraduates

**Robert E. Allender Mathematics Teaching Scholarship **

Last year one $1,100 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in Mathematics-Teaching. The student must be enrolled full-time with a GPA of at least 2.5.

**The American Society for Quality Control (State University of Iowa Section) Scholarship**

Last year one $1,000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be following a course of study appropriate for a career in quality control. Preference is given to members and descendants of members of the American Society for Quality Control (State University of Iowa Section).

**Robert W. Bettle and Virginia McShane Bettle Mathematics Education Scholarship**

Last year one $750 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching.

**Alice & George Brown Math Scholarship**

Last year one $2,100 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be enrolled in any program of the department. The student must be enrolled full-time with a GPA of at least 2.5. Students already receiving a continued scholarship (such as Presidential, CNS Awards, etc.) are not eligible.

**Robert A. and Carol L. Hendrickson Crane Scholarship**

Last year one $5,000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a student majoring in secondary mathematics education. The applicant must be a junior or senior with a minimum GPA of 3.00.

**John F. and Ruth Cross Scholarship**

Last year one $1,850 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a Statistics and Actuarial Science major who will have completed or be participating in an internship at the time of receipt. Preference shall be given to students with internships outside of Iowa.

**E.W. Hamilton Scholarship**

Last year one $2,700 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be enrolled in any program of the department or be an elementary education major with a K-6 math minor. The student must have completed 45 semester hours of college and have completed a minimum of one semester in residence at UNI prior to making application.

**Rich and Dee James Secondary Mathematics Teaching Scholarship**Last year one $1,300 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics-Teaching. The student must have a GPA of at least 3.25. Preference will be given to students who are residents of Iowa.

**Robert R. Johnson Endowed Scholarship for Mathematics**

This year one $400 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be at least a junior majoring in mathematics teaching with a concentration in statistics.

**Patricia Lange Memorial Scholarship**

Last year two $2,450 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a Mathematics major of at least junior standing. Preference is given to female students.

Last year one $3,000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be majoring in Actuarial Science. Preference will be given to students who have passed at least one SOA/CAS exam.

**Augusta Schurrer Mathematics Grant **

Last year two $2,650 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching. The student must have completed at least 65 semester hours at UNI with a GPA of a least 3.0. At least 20 of these hours must be in mathematics. Students already receiving a continued scholarship (such as Presidential, Provost, science symposium, etc.) are not eligible.

**Myrtle Wiese Smith Memorial Endowed Scholarship**

**Sorenson Elementary Mathematics Scholarship**

Last year one $3,000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be an elementary education major with a K-6 mathematics minor who shows outstanding promise as a prospective teacher. The applicant must have completed at least 75 credit hours at UNI with a GPA of at least 3.0. The student must also have at least 17 hours of completed work on the elementary mathematics minor with a GPA of at least 3.0. Selection will be made on the basis of scholarship and the potential for success as an elementary or middle school teacher; a short essay on your goals and aspirations for teaching mathematics is part of the application process. Students who graduate in Spring 2016 (or later) are eligible.This scholarship will be awarded Spring 2016 and funds will be credited to the recipients U-bill at that time.

**Thiessen Elementary Mathematics Education Scholarship**

Last year one $3,000 scholarship was awarded.* The applicant must be an elementary education major with a minor in K-8 mathematics education.

**Marcia E. Traer Endowment Scholarship**

Last year two $2,300 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics the following academic year. The recipient must be employed part-time and preference will be given to female applicants.

**Carl and Wanda Wehner Mathematics Teaching Scholarship**

Last year two $3,600 scholarships were awarded.* The applicant must be a junior or senior majoring in Mathematics - Teaching who shows outstanding promise as a prospective teacher. Overall GPA and mathematics GPA must be at least 3.0. At least one semester of residency at UNI must have been completed at the time of application. Preference is given to students who intend to teach in Iowa for two years following graduation. The applicant must show financial need.

## Scholarships - Available for Graduate Students

**FINE Foundation Middle Grade Mathematics Teacher's Graduate Student Scholarship: **

Applicants must be a beginning or current member of a cohort in UNI's Mathematics for Middle Grades MA Program. Applicants must be employed as a mathematics teacher in the state of Iowa, have at least two years teaching experience and be in good academic standing.

**Michael Millar Scholarship**A scholarship award of up to $1000 to students who demonstrate merit and financial need with preference given to students enrolled in the Master of Arts Program in Mathematics. The recipient must be taking at least six credit hours of graduate-level mathematics in any twelve-month period.

**John C. Peterson Mathematics Education Graduate Scholarship: **

A scholarship of about $950 will be awarded for a beginning or current member of a cohort in UNI's Graduate Programs in Mathematics Education. The applicant must be employed as a mathematics teacher in the state of Iowa, have two years of school teaching experience and have good academic standing.

** We anticipate, but cannot guarantee, similar funding this year. *

Scholarship recipients will be announced by the end of the Spring 2016 semester. These scholarships will be awarded for the Fall 2016-Spring 2017 academic year. The funds will be credited to the recipient's U-bill, usually half of the total each semester.
