Parking Division

Except for virtual C, R or Motorcycle- you can come to our office during our normal office hours to purchase a parking permit.

The Parking Division is located in 30 Gilchrist Hall. Parking personnel can answer your questions and provide you with directions, maps and appropriate permits.

Permit Refunds: At this time, contact our office for any questions regarding refunds.

Student pre ordering for the 2024-25 academic year is scheduled to begin Monday, April 1, 2024.

New Students: You must be enrolled in Fall 2024 classes to access the portal for the first time!

There are several changes for the next academic year:

-B Student permits will now be Virtual Permit. This is a permit number assigned to your vehicle's plate. You will not receive a physical hang tag or permit.

-B and C student permits now offer a Fall only option. They will expire on December 31, 2024.

-Effective April 23, 20247, we will now require the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) for any new vehicle added.

Faculty and Staff pre ordering for the 2024-25 academic year is scheduled to begin Monday, May 6, 2024.

In order to comply with upcoming Workday changes we plan having eligible permits and pay types for current faculty and staff available at that time.

The deadline for the 12-month pre-tax option will end on August 15, 2024.

Except for C, R and Motorcycle (MC) virtual permits- all other permits are issued from the Parking Office located in Gilchrist Hall room 30. C, R and Motorcycle virtual parking permits are still ordered via the Parking Portal.

NEW-Change or Update Plate/Vehicle Form! Use this verses calling or email to:

Change the license plate of your primary vehicle (the one your physical or virtual permit's attached to).
Change the vehicle you now drive but the plate remains the same.
Update your plate number from temporary plate (VIN).

Parking On Campus

There are more than 8,300 parking stalls on campus, and more than 16,000 students, faculty, staff and visitors on campus daily. The allocation of these resources is one of the many responsibilities of the Parking Division staff.

Parking employees enforce the rules and regulations published in the Parking Manual. Copies of the manual are available for review at the Public Safety Office and online.

Basic Rules for Parking on Campus

All vehicles operating on the UNI campus are to be registered with the Parking Services Office. Parking staff will determine which type of permit is available to meet your needs.

Park only in areas valid for your permit or park in a non-visitor metered area. Most lots have restricted usage from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Read the signs posted at the entrance of each lot to see what restrictions apply.

Avoid parking in stalls designated for persons with disabilities unless you have the appropriate permit. Visitors to campus can park in any metered area. Any visitor needing to park for an extended amount of time may use the designated visitor parking in the Gallagher Bluedorn metered lot and the Multimodal Transportation Center, where meters have a 10-hour time limit.

Visitor Parking

Guests and visitors holding visitor parking permits are not allowed in the meters without paying. The only excepting is in the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts lot and the Multimodal Transportation Center. Permits will be specific to the area in which they are valid.

If you are a visitor to campus (not a student, full/part time faculty or staff, contract employee or vendor) citations for failure to purchase -and the vehicle has had no previous violations- will serve as a warning and no payment is due at this time. All other violations are not treated as warnings.

Ticket Appeals

If you wish to appeal a violation, an appeal must be filled within 10 days of the violation issuance date.

An online appeal may be done by logging onto your parking account via the Parking Portal page. Non-UNI persons can go here to set up an account and appeal the citation.

Appeals will be accepted in oral or written form by the Parking Appeal Committee.
Upon receipt of a parking appeal, parking staff will conduct an administrative review of the appeal to ensure it meets criteria for a valid appeal.
Once established criteria for an appeal is met, the appeal will go to the Parking Appeal Committee for consideration. Once the Parking Appeal Committee makes a decision, the person who submitted the appeal will be informed of the decision.
Valid appeal criteria should provide evidence the parking violation was not committed or the parking infraction was due to circumstances beyond the driver’s control.
The following reasons will not be considered as valid for appealing a parking citation:
1. Lack of knowledge of the parking rules and regulations.
2. Vehicle was illegally parked for a short period of time.
3. Other vehicles were similarly parked in an illegal fashion.
4. No other parking area was available.
5. Violator did not receive citations in the past for a similar infraction.
6. Violator was late for class or an appointment.
7. Disagreement with or dislike of the regulation(s).
8. No impact on or denial of legal parking for others.

Failure to appear for an oral appeal at the appointed time will result in denial of the appeal.
