University of Northern Iowa alumnus Ian Goldsmith performs his one-man show "The Salutatorian" at Chicago's Second City.

This September, UNI alumnus Ian Goldsmith, ‘12, performed an original one-man comedy show to two sold-out audiences at The Second City's de Maat Studio Theater in Chicago—by most measures, a successful venture. But Goldsmith doesn’t always feel like a success.

Security awareness - Data privacy in an era of compliance

Jan. 28 is Data Privacy Day. Data privacy for individuals means reviewing privacy settings on social media, being mindful of entering data into websites and taking ownership of one's online identity. Data privacy for higher education institutions extends these principles to caring for other people's data, from collection, processing, sharing and storing to destruction. Online W-2s were made available Jan. 10 for active employees previously electing to not have a paper W-2 mailed to them. Paper W-2s for other employees will be mailed to be received by Jan. 31. Diversity, Inclusion & Social Justice open house

The Center for Multicultural Education, Military & Veteran Student Services and Gender & Sexuality Student Services have merged into a cohesive unit that will advance inclusion and social justice through advocacy and support of underrepresented and marginalized students, provide diversity education for all its community members, and promote a safe and welcoming environment that fosters academic success, a sense of belonging and respect for all people and cultures. Celebrate the new office of Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice during an open house Thursday, Jan. 24. Sessions begin at 9 a.m, noon and 4 p.m.

Spring break hosting opportunity

Five students from Yamanashi University in Japan will be studying in the Culture and Intensive English Program Feb. 7 through March 23. The CIEP is seeking home stays for these students from the evening of Monday, March 18, through the morning of Saturday, March 23. Hosts must be able to provide basic amenities, including a private room, meals, a clean bathroom and 24-hour access to Wifi. To sign up, email Sally Roos.

Graduate student writing support in the Learning Center

Kathryn Wohlpart, thesis and dissertation reviewer, will be available during walk-in hours for guidance on theses, dissertations and research papers. Change in Maucker Union hours of operation

Beginning Monday, Jan. 14, Maucker Union regular building hours will be Sunday noon - 11 p.m., Monday - Thursday 7 a.m. - 11 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday noon - 5 p.m. Events can continue to be booked outside of regular business hours. Late night studying access will remain available on the the plaza level (upper level) Sunday-Thursday from 11 p.m. - 7 a.m. Students will access the building by using their UNI ID at the electronic access panel outside of the Center for Multicultural Education (CME), located at the northeast entrance of the building. Victoria Hurst, public administration and political science, was honored recently as the Young Woman of Tomorrow by the YWCA during its 2015 Cedar Valley Women of Persimmon Awards luncheon.

The UNI American Advertising Federation placed first at the District 9 National Student Advertising Competition. The 16 winning district teams across the country will now compete in a semi-final round.

Olivia Mossman, a senior electronic media communications major, was named the Most Outstanding Intern by the American Advertising Federation Stickell Internship Advisory Board for her work last summer in New York City at global media agency Carat.

Molly Rome, a UNI senior majoring in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)/Spanish, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program grant to Argentina for an English Teaching Assistantship.
