MLK Day of Service at UNI

Students volunteering at the MLK Day of Service

“The MLK Day of Service is an opportunity for UNI students and Cedar Valley citizens to turn a ‘day off’ into a ‘day on’ where they can mobilize to help fight hunger in their own community."

The University of Northern Iowa’s Service and Leadership Council is partnering with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank and the Volunteer Center of the Cedar Valley to host their third annual Martin Luther King Day of Service from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 15, in Maucker Union on UNI’s campus.

Participants are invited to help package food for the Northeast Iowa Food Bank that will be contributed towards their “Backpack Program.” The Backpack Program provides meals for children who do not have stable meals over the weekend.

“The MLK Day of Service is an opportunity for UNI students and Cedar Valley citizens to turn a ‘day off’ into a ‘day on’ where they can mobilize to help fight hunger in their own community,” said Ashley Adams, campus programs coordinator.

The event is open to the public. Participants are asked to bring and donate at least one jar of peanut butter. Volunteers with children under the age of 12 are encouraged to participate in a Youth MLK Day event hosted at the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
