Oh, the places UNI graduates go!
Each year, the University of Northern Iowa Office of Career Services releases a report detailing post-graduation success. In 2013, 88 percent of respondents were either employed or receiving further education – the second highest number in the past five years.
As noted by the 2013 Career Services Graduate Report, many UNI students are finding success.
The annual graduate report categorizes respondents by department and major. The overall "occupied" percentage accounts for students who are employed, full-time volunteers, serving in the military, or full-time, stay-at-home parents.
"We are getting really close to pre-recession levels of hiring," said Matt Nuese, associate director of Career Services. "We are seeing a strong trend that, if there are jobs in Iowa, our students want to stay in Iowa."
Career Services offers many forms of assistance, including resume and interview tips, connections to employers and an online job board. Through the office, students can attend workshops, schedule mock interviews, connect with employers through the career fair and meet one-on-one with career advisers for help.
For Nuese, finding post-graduate success is not a difficult formula. "I find that a 3.0 GPA, two leadership experiences and three pre-professional experiences will almost always lead to success," noted Nuese.
"My passion is helping students with job search skills," added Libby Vanderwall, career adviser for Career Services. "In fact, many of the majors I work with require their students to get help from our office prior to seeking internships or jobs."
One of the most important parts of Career Services is creating connections with employers. For example, Nuese meets with the employer relations and advising teams to make sure they are creating connections for students. "We conduct a significant amount of employer outreach, including hosting more than 250 employers on campus annually," said Nuese.
Although the annual graduate report is important, it is not the complete picture. "The best way to read this data is by looking at the employers and graduate programs, listening to students, and then making curriculum changes," noted Nuese. Career Services uses the numbers as a benchmark for how they are reaching the state and ways to improve.
"Every student has a goal of what they want to do upon graduation," said Nuese. "Career Services will help develop a realistic plan to obtain those goals." And as noted by the 2013 job report, many UNI students are finding success.
