Student success: Spring 2013 grads

Approximately 1,644 UNI students graduated this spring. A few are giving us a sneak peek at their next adventure...

Matt Samec – New Hampton, Iowa
B.S. – biology with chemistry minor

During his time at UNI, Matt has been involved in a number of activities – Knights of Columbus, Pre-Med Club, UNI Honors Program and mentoring at Big Brothers Big Sisters to name a few. He chose to attend UNI because of the small school feel and the big school opportunities. After graduation, Matt is attending medical school at Creighton University.

"UNI has prepared me the last four years for this new beginning. Thoughts of uncertainty have been replaced with thoughts of confidence and excitement for what lies ahead."

Elizabeth Mastalio – Iowa City, Iowa
B.A. – mathematics teaching

Being a Presidential Scholar and participating in the UNI Honors Program had a huge influence in Elizabeth's life. She worked with professors that shared her passion for teaching. After graduation, Elizabeth will be teaching 9-12 mathematics at the Kimberly Center Alternative High School in Davenport, Iowa.

"I found out who I wanted to be while at UNI, and then UNI gave me the confidence and skills to be that person."

Phil Musson – Iowa City, Iowa
B.A. – management: organizational leadership and Spanish

Phil chose to attend UNI because it seemed like the right balance between some of the other schools he had been looking at. He was heavily involved with Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE), a marketing/sales/management professional fraternity, and was fortunate enough to elected president of the group in 2012. Phil has a summer full of travels planned, but after his trips wind down, he'll be working at Principal Financial Group in Des Moines as part of their Leadership Development Program.

"I'll look back on my time here with nothing but great memories of time spent with some pretty fantastic people."
