The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $450,384 grant to the University of Northern Iowa to improve adult college readiness. The grant will provide funding for the UNI Educational Opportunity Center (EOC). The goal of the center is to increase the number of adults from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete a secondary school diploma or equivalent and enroll in a postsecondary institution.

"The Educational Opportunity Center has and continues to still have a huge tremendous impact on nontraditional students and veterans who have a desire to achieve higher learning," said Robert Smith, executive director of Educational Opportunity Programs and Special Community Services at UNI.

In total, $48 million was awarded to 143 colleges and organizations in 42 states. UNI was one of two colleges in the state of Iowa to receive funding from the grant.

UNI first began to sponsor the EOC in 1988. The program is housed within the UNI Center for Urban Education located in Waterloo. All services of the UNI EOC are free to eligible participants who are age 19 or older and do not have a 4-year degree.
