Course reserve reinstatements

Planning to use your fall 2017 course reserves in your spring 2018 course? If so, submit a course reserve reinstatement form to ensure your materials are ready for spring 2018. The reinstatement deadline is Friday, Dec 15. After that time all current course lists will become inactive.

Stay at home if you are sick

January through March are typically the prime months for cold and flu. A survey of 119 office workers showed that about a third said they always come to work sick. According to many experts, there may be no place worse than an office environment for containing germs. The take away: stay home if you are sick. Review of new Undergraduate Student Academic Forgiveness Program Policy

A new policy is available for review before approval. 3.21 Undergraduate Student Academic Forgiveness Program Policy would provide an option to undergraduate students to seek one semester of forgiveness for past academic coursework after separation from the university for a minimum of four years. Run-off election voting

Gilchrist Hall has been designated as a polling location for the Tuesday, Dec. 5, run-off election. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Certain parking meters on the west side of Gilchrist Hall will be designated for voters only. Questions can be directed to Joe Tyler at 273-2712.

There is a run-off election for a Cedar Falls City Council at-large seat from 7 a.m. to  8 p.m. The candidates are Rob Green and Leann Saul.

McElroy Fellowships

McElroy Fellowship candidates must intend to pursue a Ph.D. and be a Dec. 2017 or May 2018 graduate with a liberal arts degree. Awardees will receive $12,000 per year for three years to help defray education costs. In addition to an above-average academic record, students will be evaluated on their character, leadership and general interests. Potential applicants should contact Bryce Kanago to express interest and discuss eligibility. The UNI application deadline is Thursday, Feb. 15.

Thesis and dissertation formatting workshop

James Dietrich, geography, will facilitate a workshop about thesis and dissertation formatting from noon to 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 4, in 301 LIB. Discussion topics include setting up Zotero, a reference manager; leveraging Microsoft Word's built-in features, such as automatic table of contents generation, figure and table captioning, footnotes and in-text citations; and building your front matter, such as title pages, signatures pages, table of contents, and lists of tables and figures. All non-thesis and thesis graduate students and faculty are welcome.

The UNI-NASA Connection

Tomas Gonzalez-Torres, former NASA Space Station flight director, will speak from 4 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 28, in the Elm Room, MAU. He will talk about how researchers can connect with the Iowa Space Grant Consortium and NASA. Topics include how the ISGC supports research for faculty in Iowa; how to collaborate with NASA on research related to STEM areas; how to connect, interact and collaborate with NASA; and available grant opportunities.

2018 renewals of cell phone and data access allowances

The Cell Phone and Data Access Policy requires employees receiving cell phone and data access allowances to have the authorization reviewed and approved annually. Visit the Office of Business Operations website for links to the policy, allowance form and FAQs. Authorizations must be received in Business Operations by Thursday, Nov. 30, to receive the allowance on the January payroll.

McNair Scholars Program dress for success professional clothing drive

The McNair Scholars Program is having a professional clothing drive. Donations of new or gently worn adult women's and men's business casual and professional clothes of all sizes will be accepted. The Clothes Closet will offer free professional clothes for students in need as they transition into the professional world. Donations can be dropped off at the Honors Cottage beginning Friday, Dec. 1, or contact Juana Hollingsworth to make arrangements for pick up.

The Great American Smokeout

Every year on the third Thursday of November smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout event. Encourage someone you know to make a plan to quit, or contact Therese Callaghan to explore the resources UNI offers for tobacco cessation. By quitting for even one day, smokers will be taking an important step toward a healthier life and reducing their cancer risk.

Security awareness: phishing remains the number one threat

Phishing attacks pose a greater threat to users losing their access to accounts than other cyber snares such as keyloggers or password reuse, according to a report by Google. Mutli-factor authentication is coming to UNI and will largely eliminate the threat posed by phishing.

Lifelong University classes needed for spring 2018

Lifelong University is seeking instructors to teach a course next spring. Courses are typically taught once a week for four consecutive weeks and are two hours long for lifelong learners. Instructors are paid $50 per hour and can create their own schedule. Courses will begin in January. The deadline for submission for class proposals is Friday, Dec. 8. STEM Chat: SynDaver lab tour

The next STEM Chat, a tour of the biology department's SynDaver Lab, is from noon to 12:50 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16, MSH. The SynDavers (synthetic cadavers) are used for students to study anatomy, explore placement of medical devices and for surgical simulations.
