Carry on laptop ban might expand

The recent ban on laptops in carry-on luggage for flights to the United States from a few Middle Eastern countries and/or airports might be expanded to include flights originating in Europe as well. The timing and finality of such a decision are both unknown at this time. For more information, refer to this article in the New York Times.

Lifelong Learning University instructors needed

Lifelong Learning University is looking for faculty and staff to teach a course during the fall 2017 and/or spring 2018 semesters. Courses can be four-, two- or one-week in length. Instructors are paid $50 an hour and can determine their class schedule. If interested in teaching a class and for more information, contact Anna Baughman by Friday, June 2.

Student employee insurance

If you have a domestic student that is working 30+ hours this summer for six weeks or more, they need to be offered health insurance. Please contact Sarah Goblirsch to receive the insurance form that must be presented and signed by the student (even if they wish to decline the insurance). Students have 30 days from when their hours increase to sign up for the insurance.

Burst Your Thirst Challenge

UNI Employee Well-being invites you to participate in the BYT Challenge where teams engage in a competition to track water consumption and physical activity in an attempt to advance on the leaderboard. Employees will be provided with weekly emails and opportunities to win incentive prizes. Registration begins Monday, May 15.

Cedar Valley’s Bike to Work Week is May 15-19. Individuals who post a picture of themselves biking to work during this week will be entered in a drawing for a prize. Faculty/staff tech tips

Course dashboard, sometimes called notifications dashboard, is a convenient way to quickly view what's going on in your course. It can show what assignments need grading, what is new, important alerts and much more. If you don't see one in your course, you can always create a new one. Simply mouse over the plus sign (+) on the left navigation pane and select "Module Page." Give it an appropriate name (like "Course Dashboard") and then add the modules you want by clicking "Add Course Module." For more information, visit the official tutorial. Panther Pick Up

A number of charitable organizations will be on campus Thursday and Friday, May 4-5, accepting donations. Trucks will be stationed at four residence hall locations on Thursday and Friday afternoon. Iowa Meets China

Action needed so students can charge to their u-bill this summer

If you have student employees working on campus this summer who are not enrolled in summer classes, notify the Department of Residence if the student wishes to have the ability to charge dining purchases to their u-bill. Email their name, university ID number and summer campus affiliation to diningtech@uni.edu. Enrolled students automatically have the charge privilege, so no action is necessary.

Move-in Crew volunteers needed

WRC summer pass

Effective, Monday, May 1, the cost of a WRC pass for employees will be reduced to $50. The pass can be used until classes begin in August. New issue of the Journal of STEM Arts, Crafts and Constructions

Volume 2, Issue 1 of this peer-reviewed, online, open-access journal has been posted on the UNI Scholarworks website. This issue features an editorial about NGSS, along with practical articles about first graders making sundials, third graders making ecosystem lift-the flap pages and other fossil-related crafts. Research articles show kindergarten students inventing/testing waterproof boots related to the water cycle, eighth graders exploring modern and fossil marine invertebrates and insects, and sixth graders investigating models and designs.

Faculty 12-month pay option

Faculty can be paid for their continuing non-temporary academic year appointment in 10 or 12 equal installments beginning with the Aug. 31 or July 31 payroll, respectively. Faculty who would like to change their salary payments from 10 to 12 months, or vice versa, must complete a Pay Frequency Change Form. The completed form must be received in Business Operations-Payroll, mail code 0008, by Monday, May 15. Questions can be directed to Amy Stanbrough or call 273-7049.

By using the student preview tool, you can view the course from the perspective of a student. This can also give access to areas that you cannot see as an instructor, such as "My Grades." TPC Restoration and Management Seminar Series

The Tallgrass Prairie Center will host Buchanan County farmer Richard Sloan at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 20. Sloan has established prairie strips in some of his fields to save soil and support wildlife. He will share his experience with prairie strips and how 21st century farming is much more than maximizing production of corn and soybeans. The Tallgrass Prairie Center is located at 2412 W. 27th Street. The seminar is free and open to the public.
