Service Learning Institute

All faculty are invited to apply to attend a Service Learning Institute Monday through Wednesday, May 16 to 18. This workshop will focus on incorporating service learning activities into courses in ways that align with course learning goals, enhance student growth and civic awareness, and strengthen our community. Faculty and staff with lobbying contacts

Lobbying activity from Jan. 1 to March 30 must be reported by Friday, April 1. In compliance with the Lobbying Disclosure Act of 1995 and the Honest and Open Government Act of 2007, UNI files quarterly reports on specific lobbying issues and the expenses incurred in lobbying. The university's policy on Federal and State Lobbying and Political Activity can be found in the Policies and Procedures Manual at 10.09. If there is nothing to report for a particular quarter, note that in the "comments" section. Contact Randy Pilkington, director of Federal Relations, with questions.

Mental health on campus: what you need to know

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning will host a panel discussion from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, in 378 LIB. Panelists will discuss what to do to help students in distress, ask questions about mental health issues and learn what resources are available for students, faculty and staff to address mental health concerns. Panelists will be Leslie Williams, Dave Towle, Debby Ferguson, Mark Rowe-Barth and Therese Callaghan.

The Chinese Language and Culture Association will host an open house and social from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 30, in the University Room, MAU. The groups will share their accomplishments and information about their programs. Lunch and beverages will be provided.

Family art exhibit

The Gallery of Art will showcase the Latino American children's exhibit "Family" Thursday, March 24, to Tuesday, April 19. The exhibit was organized by Wendy Miller and features artwork from students in Cedar Falls and Waterloo elementary schools. An opening reception will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 24, and is free and open to the public.

Rod Library will host Gaming in Color, a documentary film about LGBTQ issues in the gaming industry, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 22, in the Oak Room, MAU. The film focuses on lesbian, gay, transgender and queer issues in video games, gaymer culture and events, and the rise of queer themes in gaming.

Tu Historia

The Rod Library, as a part of the Latino Americans: 500 Years of History programming, is creating Tu Historia: Latino Americans in Iowa, an oral history collection that focuses on the experiences of Latinos and Latino Americans in the Midwest. The project will promote cultural connections through the stories of individuals. All Latino/as are encouraged to share their stories through photos, video or by just speaking with us. The Web team in University Relations has merged with the Web staff in ITS-User Services, forming a new Web team housed in the ITTC. "Most Likely to Succeed" documentary

The education documentary "Most Likely to Succeed" will be shown at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 8, in the auditorium, LNG. A discussion will follow. The current U.S. education system was developed a century ago. The world economy has since transformed profoundly, but the education system has not. This documentary tells the story of a school in San Diego that is completely rethinking what the experience of going to school looks like.

Free anxiety screening

The Counseling Center will hold free anxiety screenings at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 9, in 103 SHC. Screenings are open to students, faculty and staff. Registration is not required. Participants will complete a questionnaire and meet privately with a counselor who will briefly discuss the results.
