Diversity Colloquium: 'Serving our Community, While Learning: Service-Learning and Professional Development at UNI'

In the Public Policy and Evaluation class this semester, students are partnering with the local Waterloo nonprofit organization, House of Hope, which runs a two-year transitional home for single mothers. Students in the class developed evaluation instruments (e.g. take-in, process and outcome) that can be used over a long period of time. West African Drum Ensemble performance

In conjunction with Ballroom Bash: Iowa's Rock 'n' Roll Legacy, the West African Drum Ensemble will perform at 5 p.m., Thursday, April 20, in the museum. The performance and lecture will explore the historic origins of Rock 'n' Roll rhythms and beats and how these sounds have evolved over time.

Good Neighbor Iowa kickoff event

Good Neighbor Iowa, a statewide public education campaign to reduce children’s exposure to lawn pesticides and protect water quality, will have a kickoff from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 22, at Seerley Park. Speakers will include a park director, a family physician, Dubuque city staff and a childcare center director. Attendees will learn the value of diverse, pesticide-free lawns, sign a pesticide-free pledge, grow their own sample of pesticide-free grass and more. “Good Neighbor” yard signs, frisbees and cups will be available.

2017 Student Leadership Awards recipients

Recipients were announced at the 2017 Student Leadership Awards Tuesday, April 11. The ceremony recognized outstanding student leadership through a series of awards presented to students and student organizations. Awards included the Lux Service Award, Outstanding Student Leader Award and Servant Leadership Award. The Lux Service Award is the most prestigious award given to graduating senior students to acknowledge their outstanding involvement and lasting legacy. Women's self-defense course

Join the Public Safety Department for a discussion on self-defense. Police officers will discuss sexual assault prevention and reduction techniques as well as demonstrate physical techniques for self-defense. The course will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, April 18, 20, 25 and 27, in 204 WRC. Cost is $25, payable the first night of class. The class is limited to 15 female students. The Student Health Clinic will provide free sexual health screenings from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Thursday, April 13, and 1 to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, April 20. Call 273-2009 to schedule an appointment. Participating students will receive a $10 gift card to Jimmy Johns or Kwik Star, while supplies last.

Online medical terminology course added for fall

Medical Terminology (HPE 2160, 2 hours) has been added to the fall schedule of classes as an online course. HPE 2160 covers basic terminology and vocabulary used in medical fields and is often a pre-requisite for students entering PT, OT or medical school.

Immigration Forum: A Conversation About Immigration in Iowa

The UNI Immigration Working Group will host a moderated discussion about immigration issues in Iowa from 3 to 5 p.m., Monday, April 17, in 002 SAB. Panelists include: Ali Alnasser, UNI international student; Miryam Antúnez de Mayolo, immigration attorney; Edis Beganovic, Bosnian immigrant; Brook Boehmler, mayor of Hampton; Juan Carlos Castillo and Elise DuBord, languages and literatures; and Tony Thompson, Black Hawk County Sheriff. The presentation will end with a Q&A session and refreshments. The forum is open to the public.

TRIUNI, a fun triathlon open to first timers, seasoned triathletes and anyone who wants to be active and have fun, will be from 8 to 10 p.m., Saturday, April 22, in the WRC. Safely swim 300 yards in the pool, bicycle 10 miles inside on a stationary spin bike and run a 5K through campus.
