Panther Parent is UNI's e-newsletter for parents and guardians. Panther Parent is sent three times per semester and features university events, deadlines and tips from the UNI Parents Association. 


UNI recognized by Military Advanced Education

UNI has been selected as a Military-Friendly University in Military Advanced Education's (MAE) 2013 Guide to Military Friendly Colleges & Universities. The guide provides potential students with information about institutions that go out of their way to implement military-friendly policies in support of men and women in uniform.

UNI named one of top producers of U.S. Fulbright scholars

The University of Northern Iowa has been named by The Chronicle of Higher Education one of the top producers of Fulbright Scholars in the U.S. after three UNI professors were awarded Fulbright Scholarship grants for their research projects abroad.

UNI named to Kiplinger's top 100 'Best-Value Public Colleges'

UNI has been ranked among the nation's top "100 Best Values in Public Colleges" by Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine for 2013. The ranking cites four-year schools that combine outstanding education with economic value. UNI placed in the top 100 for its high four-year graduation rate, low average-student debt at graduation, abundant financial aid, a low sticker price and overall great value. Presidential search committee begins interview process

The UNI Presidential Search and Screen Committee will bring three candidates to campus. For information about the candidates, visit the presidential search website. The committee's final recommendations are expected to be provided to the Board of Regents, State of Iowa in mid-February.

UNI unveils new website

UNI's new enhanced website is live. You'll find a new parent's page, too. UNI also has unveiled a brand new communication platform called Inside UNI, linked off of UNI's home page. The purpose of Inside UNI is to provide more opportunities to tell the stories of faculty, staff and students and share current news and relevant campus announcements.

Spring Commencement details

Dates, times and locations for spring Commencement have been finalized. Visit the registrar's website for details.

UNI graduates fare well in today's economy

UNI's Career Services office collects data on recent grads as well as current students. Nearly 84 percent of last year's graduates secured jobs or were continuing their education upon graduation, according to the 2011 Career Services Graduate Report.

Severe weather announcements

Announcements regarding cancellation of classes and/or reduced university operations are made via UNI Alert, local radio and TV stations, the UNI home page and social media. For more information, visit http://www.uni.edu/resources/weather.

Graduation and dean's lists

The list of fall 2012 graduates and dean’s list members will be released soon. Shortly thereafter, University Relations will send a notice to area newspapers with a link to a website where they can find the names of students from their coverage area. If students have restricted their directory information, the university can't make this information public.

Time to reapply for financial aid

Students must reapply for financial aid each academic year. Students are encouraged to complete forms as soon as possible after Jan. 1. To reapply, visit www.fafsa.ed.gov. Contact the UNI Financial Aid Office at 800-772-2736 or 319-273-2700 with any questions.

Summer aid estimates

If your student is considering taking summer classes, they can get information about summer aid opportunities from the financial aid office.

Students can learn to manage their money

UNI's Office of Student Financial Aid offers the course, Live Like a Student each semester. This free, non-credit course meets six times per semester and is designed to teach financial literacy. Topics include budgeting, credit, student loans and identity protection.

Tutoring can help get students up to speed

Not everyone masters every subject right away. If your son or daughter needs help with a class, suggest UNI's ASK-A-TUTOR service. UNI has free tutors (peer instructors) for many Liberal Arts Core and major courses. Students can call Academic Services at 319-273-6023 or visit the AS website.

Coming fall 2013: more on-campus living options

Coming fall 2013, students will have a variety of new and enhanced options for on-campus living. Options include: expanded Living Learning Communities, "Springboard" communities for freshmen and more opportunities for juniors and seniors to experience apartment-style living on campus. Is your student career ready?

The Spring Career Fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday, Feb. 18, in the McLeod Center. More than 100 businesses, organizations and professional schools will be on hand to visit with students about career opportunities and internships. Check the list of participating employers at http://www.uni.edu/careerservices.

Rod Library help via text message

Text the Rod Library staff at 319-242-1508 to ask questions about library resources and services. Text messages will be answered during regular business hours.


Get involved -- join UNIPA

All parents and guardians of UNI students are automatically members of the UNI Parents Association, which works as an advocacy group. Benefits include e-newsletters each semester and a parents' booth at orientation. Contact Leslie Williams, UNIPA liaison, at 319-273-2332 with questions. The parents association also supports the Parents Fund, which supports student scholarships and activities on campus.


The UNI Parents Association Advisory Board members get the opportunity to share their opinions and insights with UNI staff and faculty. It's a great opportunity to hear and be heard. The board's spring meeting is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 9. Please mark your calendars to attend. Learn more on the UNIPA website
