Introduction

After 45 years, Universidad de San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL) has become one of the top education centers in Peru. The bilingual school focuses on social responsibility, globalization, entrepreneurship, and research and development. Students interested in taking courses in Spanish will study at the Cusco campus. While students looking to take classes in English can study at the Lima and Cusco campuses.

 

Location

Situated within the Andes, Cusco offers a unique mix of indigenous heritage and western influence. Art galleries, museums, cafes, bars, discotheques, and markets provide in city entertainment. Nearby ruins make for excellent day trip destinations. Cusco’s permanent population of 420,000 surges every year as over a million tourists pass through the city on their way to visit the ruins of Machu Picchu.

Temperatures stay consistently in the upper 60’s all year round.

USIL

Courses: USIL offers a wide array of courses in Spanish and English. Students can take up to 5 courses during the semester, the equivalent of 15 UNI credit hours. USIL offers courses in the following fields of study:

USIL believes in a combination of theory and hands on experience. Most courses include field trips to cultural sites such as: museums, native communities, and archaeological digs. Additional faculty-led visits to Machu Picchu are available as well.

Academic Calendar: The Spring semester at USIL runs from mid-January and ends in early-May. This is the Semester 1 because they go off the calendar year. Semester 2 (the Fall semester) is from mid-August  to early-December. For exact dates, view the apply tab or talk with the study abroad staff. 

Credits and Grades: USIL uses the same credits as we do at UNI, however, be sure to meet with your study abroad advisor to make sure you understand how grades will be transferred in at UNI.

Casa de Don Ignacio

Students can stay at USIL housing in La Casa de Don Ignacio. Students live in double room with a shared bathroom and kitchen access. Breakfast, Wi-Fi, laundry, and cleaning services are all covered by the monthly rent.

Home Stay

Students can also live with local Peruvian host families. The cost of housing includes 3 meals a day. Host families provide excellent immersion opportunities. A host stay is ideal for students who wish to practice Spanish outside of the classroom.

Summer School

USIL offers two summer session at their Cusco campus. Both sessions in the summer will last 5 weeks in duration. The first session is from late-May to early-July and the second session is from early-July to early-August.

The Study Abroad Center reserves the right to determine participants' eligibility to Study Abroad. Students must meet all of the following in order to be eligible to Study Abroad:

  • Have a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher at the time of application and maintain this GPA prior to departure and throughout the study abroad process
    • If your cumulative GPA is between 2.40 to 2.49, submit the following to the Study Abroad Center (28 Gilchrist):
      • A letter of reference from your academic advisor supporting your pursuit of study abroad
      • An essay, which should explain why your cumulative GPA is below a 2.50, include how your cumulative GPA is stable or improving, a detailed plan for improving your academic performance a strong academic and/or personal interest in your study abroad location and/or course, and a compelling academic rationale for studying abroad.
  • Must be over the age of 18 years old
  • Must meet the course prerequisites (participation in the program is dependent upon meeting these)
  • Must be in good standing with the University
  • UNI's partner institutions may require additional eligibility requirements to be met, these vary from institution to institution. Please consult with the Study Abroad Center staff to discuss these additional requirements if applicable.
  • Applicants traveling to a region of a country or a country with an overall Travel Advisory Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) or 4 (Do Not Travel) will not be eligible.
  • All study abroad applicants must pass the Study Abroad Applicant Assessment with a score of 70% or greater.
  • Applicants may be selected for an in-person interview before being accepted. Selection for an interview does not guarantee acceptance into the program. You will be contacted directly by the Study Abroad Center if selected for an interview.
