WRC Family Services

We designate family time at the Wellness/Recreation Center so that families can enjoy leisure and recreational time together, thereby fostering family wellness. Family hours, noted on the Facility Hours scheduled, are set for times when the WRC is least used by students, with more family time available during interim and summer periods than during the academic year. Children especially enjoy our climbing wall and leisure pool, with its water slide, bubble couch, and hot tub among a variety of facilities that provide “something for everyone.”

You may wonder who we define as “family” members, eligible to come with students at no extra charge and with paid users for a small fee.
Immediate family includes:

  • For Faculty/Staff: your spouse and tax dependent children
  • For Traditional Students: your parents and other tax dependent siblings in your family
  • For Non-Traditional students: your spouse and tax dependent children
  • For Retirees: your spouse
  • Special Family Circumstances: If you have a special family circumstance (such as a non-married life partner, an adult dependent child living with you, or a dependent parent living with you), contact either Kathy Green, (319)273-6921, or Tim Klatt, (319) 273-7120, to arrange accommodation of your request.
Family Member Policy

Once you have paid to use the WRC/Health Beat, you may also pay a nominal fee (free for current UNI students) to bring your tax dependent family members (spouse, children) with you during family hours. More information on family member fees here.

You may purchase guest passes at the Welcome desk (by check, payroll deduction, or ubill charge) for up to four guests beyond your tax dependent family members at $5.00 each or the five-punch guest card at $20.00.

If your family wants to sponsor a larger group of guests (such as your child’s friends or a family gathering), you may sponsor up to ten guests beyond immediate family members for a $40.00 fee ($55.00 for faculty/staff who are not paid users). Arrangements must be made in advance with Chris Denison, Associate Director/Facilities (319) 273-7160. Only one group is scheduled a day so the enjoyment of other facility users is not hampered.

Supervision of Children

Children must be accompanied by a parent at all times in the WRC. More on supervision policies here.

Special Accommodations
Students of non-local colleges/universities, in town for break periods (Thanksgiving, semester break, Spring Break, summer), may purchase a WRC guest pass at the one, two, three, or four week guest rate or summer alumni rate.  An academic course schedule will be requested to verify student status.  Arrangements need to be made prior to the break period by contacting the WRS office, WRC 101, or wrs@uni.edu.

Other programs that may interest those of you who are parents are the Paddling Panther swim lesson program for children offered through our WRS Aquatics Program and Kinder Gym, an early childhood motor laboratory through the School of Health, Physical Education, and Leisure Services.
