Leading Discussion Assignment: Individual presentation (10%)

You will prepare and lead one period of class discussion.  The procedures are as follows:

1.  Please check the Schedule for Leading Discussion to find the chapter and date that you are assigned to;

2.  Read through the chapter and try to understand the content in order to present this chapter to the class;
 
3.  Prepare several questions, including the questions you don’t know the answers, for class discussion. 

4. The following are the guidelines for your presentation: 

A. Introduction
Introduce the title and topic, its importance to the studies of media, culture, and society.

B. Central Theme & Argument
Summarize the author’s central point of view about this topic: argument and supporting evidence, i.e. what is the author’s point of view on this topic;

C. Theoretical basis/framework;

D. Terminology, definitions, and concepts;

E. Research methods;

F. Evidence and Reasoning

    1. What justification does the author provide for positions taken in the chapter?  
    2. Are there specific examples mentioned to illustrate the ideas and theories about information society?
    3. Is the author’s focus primarily historical, comparative, more abstract, or conceptual?   
    4. Are there positions that the chapter is arguing against?

H. PowerPoint Presentation, and Audio/Video Materials

    Please upload you presentation materials on the WebCT or bring the file saved on a floppy disk to the class.  You may also need to bring relevant audio/video materials.

Please let me know by email or coming to my office if you don’t understand the content of the chapter. We need to set up time to get the preparation done before your session.
