Tahigwa

camp tahigwa dinning hallThe goal of Camp Tahigwa is for each camper to grow in appreciation and knowledge of herself, the Girl Scout program, the natural environment and other people. Tahigwa is an American Camping Association accredited Girl Scout camp. Campers range from 1st to 11th grades. Tahigwa offers a number of different opportunities for campers and staff. Some sessions include:

  • Paddlers (canoeing units)
  • Caves and Crevasses (caving and climbing units)
  • Nightowls (nocternal camping)
  • Wheels in Motion (biking unit)
  • Outback Adventure (Primative camping)
  • Sportsbeat (Sports camp)
  • All the World's A Stage (Theater Camp)

...and many more. Each year is different with new activities and sessions. Some of my favorite past camping units include Keystoners (Architeture camp which constructed own project for camp, visited House on the Rock, and Frank Lloyd Wright School.), Reach for the Stars (Rocket and sky science camp), Rocks and Ropes (Rappel and Caving Unit).

Girl Scouts

xtreme scouting eventThe Girl Scouts organization was founded in the USA by Juliette Low in 1912. US Girl Scouts are part of WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts). WAGGGS has members in approximately 128 countries. Conestoga Council is one of 323 councils in the United States. Our council is made up of 12 Iowan counties and contains approximately 350 troops serving girls from kindergarten to senior high.

I am involved in scouting in a number of ways. As a council trainer I lead or co-lead workshops for leaders and older girls in the council. I mostly train outdoor workshops that leaders must take before taking a troop camping and leadership workshops (Program Aide, Leader-in-training) for Cadette and Senior scouts. I am also a Green Circle Facilitator. Green Circle is a pluralism training designed to help people learn that everyone has value. Green Circle is a non-Girl Scout training offered through our council. In 2002, I became a NASA Master Trainer for GSUSA. As a GSUSA NASA Trainer, I design opportunities for leaders and girls to learn more about space exploration. I have been a troop leader for two troops and the facilty advisor for Campus Scouts.

xtreme scouting eventI have even worked for the Girl Scout Council. In 1989-1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. I had various jobs at Camp Tahigwa. With Jennifer Heckmann, I Co-author/edited the Camp Tahigwa Staff manual. In 1995, I wrote a series of 1.5 hour after-school programs on the theme 'Be Your Best' and for many years I was the Overnight Girl Scout Event Director for the Grout Museum of History and Science.
