UNI I Am A Hero - Blake Findley

By: Spencer Walrath on Tue, 02/14/2012 - 15:45

This week's UNI I Am A Hero is Blake Findley!

"I am nominating Blake Findley.  Blake is a currently a member of Northern Iowa Student Government and proudly represents the College of Education.

I could not be more proud of what Blake has done for NISG and for this University.  For a Student Government that prides themselves on "students serving students", Blake does just that.  When going to Blake with a suggestion or problem regarding NISG or the student body as a whole, he sees that the problem is addressed or the suggestion is heard.

As one of thousands of students, Blake is not afraid to stand up for what he believes the rest of the student body would want.  When it comes to Northern Iowa Student Government, he takes the time out of his day to talk to his constituents and he always makes sure that his vote represents that of the student body and of the College of Education.

Blake is a selfless person and an outstanding leader and therefore I have nominated him for the UNI I Am a Hero award." - Emily Droessler

Congratulations, Blake, on your nomination!

Don't forget to nominate your friends and co-workers to be recognized as a UNI Hero! Simply go to the UNI I Am A Hero page located on the left side of our site (www.uni.edu/studentorgs/nisg/hero) and fill out the form.

Election Commission Decision on "Trevor and Beth" Twitter Account

By: Spencer Walrath on Mon, 02/13/2012 - 20:57

Based on the information received by the Election Commission on Sunday, February 12, the Election Commission has decided there has been an incidence of early campaigning. Trevor and Beth had a joint Twitter account being used for personal use before the start of campaigning. While it was not used for campaign information it was clearly linked to the candidacy, their student group, and bore the intent of being used for their candidacy. Trevor and Beth had the Twitter account removed as soon as the Election Commission became aware of this information and refrained from publishing it until the matter was settled.

As per the Election Commissions ruling, the Twitter account may be activated at 8:00amCST on Tuesday, February 14, 2012. The Election Commission feels this punishment is fair and just and sends their thanks to Trevor, Beth, and their entire campaign team for their cooperation.

UNI I Am A Hero - Zulfeta Rizvic

By: Spencer Walrath on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 19:41

This week's UNI I Am A Hero is Zulfeta Rizvic!

"I nominate my mom, Zulfeta Rizvic, to be recognized as a UNI Hero. She has recently graduated with a BA from UNI's teacher education program and is currently working toward her Master's.

I am very proud of what she has accomplished because I have seen her fight through many struggles to get an education. When we first moved to the United States from Bosnia, we spoke no English and had very little resources, as did many other Bosnians who immigrated here in the 90's. Zulfeta has worked hard to overcome the language barrier as well as the fact that she is a non-traditional student.

Teaching has always been her passion; she graduated from a four-year college in Bosnia and taught for many years before coming to the US so even when she faced this hardship, Zulfeta kept going. She is an inspiration to other teacher education students, and to other Bosnians in the community.

In addition to her own education, Zulfeta has spent the last decade teaching young Bosnians about their culture through a non-profit dance group that she formed called KUD "Kolo". Kolo has performed at hundreds of events across the world representing our community, including our own Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. The group's members include graduates of UNI, as well as current and prospective students.

Zulfeta has also served on the Human Rights Commission and received a Cedar Valley Mayor's Volunteer Award in 2004 for her volunteer work. She is also a member of the Bosnian Cultural Foundation, an organization which she helped to establish.

Zulfeta is making a positive difference for our school and community by placing an importance on education, as well as diversity and culture. With UNI being such a diverse and vibrant campus, consisting of students from many different cultures, I believe that Zulfeta is the perfect nominee for a UNI Hero." - Azra Rizvic

Congratulations, Zulfeta, on your nomination!

UNI I Am A Hero - Amandajean Freking-Nolte

By: Spencer Walrath on Wed, 02/01/2012 - 01:08

This week's UNI I Am A Hero is Amandajean Freking-Nolte!

"Amandajean is the faculty advisor of SAVE Forum Actors (Students Against a Violent Environment). Not only does she make a difference to her many student members, but she makes a bigger impact on the lives of students all over campus in so many ways. First and foremost, SAVE is one of the best groups on campus in spreading awareness of many serious issues on campus; issues such as: rape, gender violence, victim blaming, dating violence, sexuality shaming, and so much more. Amandajean makes it the groups responsibility to deliver the awareness of said issues in a discussion based manner rather than through lecturing students. This opens up the chance for students to voice their own opinions, have educational arguments, and learn about the issues more independently.

SAVE provides scenes that are realistic for college students, putting the audience in scenarios they may have seen before or will see in the future; scenarios like: parties, clubs, dorm rooms, classes, etc. In every performance SAVE members provide resourceful contacts for students who may be in danger or know someone in danger which makes students aware of the extremely safe campus they live on, and often students do not know of those sources before the performances.

In addition to raising awareness for students and providing resources Amandajean also teaches all of her SAVE students (SAVErs) how to address the issues in their own lives. I have had many personal encounters with friends who have been raped or victimized and had I not known how to handle such scenarios, I may not have been the valued help that I was. She proclaims on a regular basis how it our (SAVErs) jobs to be there in these dangerous scenarios to make a difference and become active bystanders. I had a situation arise at a party I was at once, where a sober man was taking a drunk friend of ours into his bedroom. I immediately asked him to open the door while they were "only talking" inside, and informed on the Consent policy of UNI and that when a woman is under the influence of alcohol she could not give proper consent to him.

I have many examples to display why the knowledge we learn from Amandajean is making a major difference on campus. Five years ago, she probably would have been the one at the parties doing what we do now, but now that she is married and has a newborn she has to pass that knowledge on to us. I believe that ALL SAVE MEMBERS are worthy of being a hero, but if one individual had to take the award for what SAVE does for this campus, it would be Amandajean. Our heroic leader!" - Samuel Card

Congratulations, Amandajean, on your nomination!
