Chile: Universidad de los Andes | Study Abroad Center

‌Situated next to the Andes Mountains in the capital city of Chile, Santiago, University of Los Andes (UANDES) offers a variety of courses for students to study in English.

The campus combines modern architecture with green spaces for learning and extracurricular activities. There are many clubs to get involved in as well as many services provided by the international office.

Founded in 1989, the UANDES focuses on research, innovation, and development. The school’s 8,000 students can choose from 25 undergraduate and 73 graduate programs.

Location

The campus sits at the foothills of the Andes outside of metropolitan Santiago. As the largest city in Chile, Santiago acts as a cultural and political hub.

Academics

UANDES offers 24 undergraduate programs with classes in English. There are over 8,000 students on campus. Class sizes are 18:1, similar to UNI and offer hands-on opportunities and research projects to join. Classes are offered in English so students do not need to know the language. UANDES is great for majors in: Business, Health, Communication, Education, Family Sciences, History, and the Humanities.

Los Andes offers courses in Spanish and English.

The UANDES Business Exchange Semester is completely taught in English.

Students who apply to a regular exchange semester and whose native language is not Spanish should demonstrate an upper-intermediate level of Spanish. Classes are available in the fields of:

Getting Involved:
UANDES holds an orientation week prior to the start of classes. This includes a cultural trip and activities as well as a buddy program. This is a great chance for students to learn how to get involved. There is a student organization to integrate international students with Chilean and help them with their stay.

They also offer a wide range of sports, cultural, and entertainment activities through their ICLUB program, which also organizes the IAMIGO buddy program.

If credit hours are listed as contact hours, take the Chilean contact hours and divide by 15 to get the ECTS credits.

Grades:
6.0 - 7.0 = A
5.0 - 5.9 = B
4.0 - 4.9 = C
Less than 4.0 = no transfer credit

Entry and Exit Requirements:

Review and follow the travel recommendations of the U.S. State Department for travel to Chile.

Immigration Information:

Students going to Chile for more than 90 days will need to apply for a student visa or an extension once in Chile.

Your Study Abroad Advisor will help you through this process but it is the student's responsibility to stay on top of the visa application process and to review the latest updates related to their destination country.

Housing & Meals

Los Andes does not offer on-campus housing, but there are many options outside of this. Students can list with a host family, in residences, or shared flats. Los Andes sends a list of recommended housing options to students once they are accepted to the program.

Summer School

Global Opportunities (GO UANDES) has two summer programs. They offer an intensive Spanish language program for 4-weeks in July. Courses explore Chilean and Latin American culture. This is a 3 US credit program. Students can take A1, B1, or B2 level Spanish.

They also offer a business program taught in English. This program focuses on the Chilean Economy for 3-weeks in July-August. This GO UANDES program unites students from different countries through field trips, joint projects, and other activates. This is a 4 US credit program.

‌Eligibility Requirements to Study Abroad

The Study Abroad Center reserves the right to determine participants' eligibility to study abroad. Students must have a completed study abroad application, including supportive recommendation form(s). Additionally, students must meet all of the following in order to be eligible to study abroad:

‌Have a cumulative 2.5 GPA or higher at the time of application and maintain this cumulative GPA prior to departure and throughout the study abroad process
If your cumulative GPA is lower than 2.5, submit the following to the Study Abroad Center (103 East Bartlett):
- Letters of reference from two academic contacts (e.g. academic advisor and former or current professor) supporting your pursuit of study abroad. If you are attending a faculty-led study abroad program, one of the letters must be from a course leader. However, if the program has two course leaders, only one of the letters can be from one of the course leaders.

‌Must be over the age of 18 years old
Must meet the course prerequisites (participation in the program is dependent upon meeting these)
Must be in good standing with the university
UNI's partner institutions may require additional eligibility requirements to be met, these vary from institution to institution. Please consult with the Study Abroad Center staff to discuss these additional requirements, if applicable.
Applicants traveling to a region of a country or a country with an overall Travel Advisory Level 3 (Reconsider Travel) or 4 (Do Not Travel) will not be eligible.
