Types of Programs

While UNI offers a variety of different study abroad programs, each option falls under one of two main categories: Faculty-Led or Partner University. As long as students meet our eligibility criteria, any major can study abroad on either type of program. However, our office recommends students consider going abroad earlier in their career to help stay on track for graduation.

To understand the differences, please review the information below

Faculty-Led

Faculty-led programs allow students the opportunity to learn course content from UNI Faculty/Staff through hands on, dynamic experiences abroad. For these types of programs, the Study Abroad Center will make many arrangements on the students behalf, including enrolling students into their course(s), housing while abroad, and some recreational/educational activities. Typically, faculty-led programs include:

  • A group of 10-25 students (could be more or less depending on the program)
  • Travel for 2-4 weeks during winter or summer breaks
  • 3-5 academic credits that will be listed on a students transcript upon completion of the program

This type of program is a great fit for students who:

  • Want to travel with friends
  • Have never traveled abroad before
  • Do not have a lot of flexibility in their academic graduation plan

Partner Programs

Partner University programs provide UNI students the opportunity to live and learn at a university in another country. Depending on the location, students can study at a partner institution for a summer, semester, or academic year. Students will work with the Study Abroad Center and their academic advisors to ensure all classes they take while abroad will transfer back so students won't fall behind in their academic plan and can still graduate on time!

Semester/Academic Year:

  • Take a minimum of 12 US credits per semester that can transfer back for major, minor, UNIFI, or elective credit
  • Study with classmates from the US and around the world (local and other international)
  • Grow personally and integrate with the local community

Summer School/J-term:

  • Study and explore at a university abroad for 1-3 months
  • Take 3-12 US credits depending on the host university
  • Gain unique learning experiences by participating in specialized courses
  • Enjoy group excursions arranged by the university abroad

USAC

  • Find additional locations through our partnership with USAC
  • Over 50 different programs to choose from that vary in length, location, and time of year
  • Some programs offer on site or virtual internship or research opportunities
  • All students who study abroad through USAC or other third party providers still need to work with our office to ensure credits will transfer back

Internship/Volunteer Opportunities

  • Gain professional internship/volunteer experience in your chosen field of study while earning academic credit
  • Work with the Study Abroad Center staff to define goals and identify your opportunities abroad
  • Opportunities available year-round
